Dems flip New York state seat that Republicans have held for nearly four decades

Democrats in New York flipped a New York Assembly seat on Tuesday, winning a seat that has been in GOP hands for nearly four decades. Democrat Steve Stern, a former Suffolk County legislator, beat out Janet Smitelli (R) for AD-10, a Long Island seat, with 59 percent of the vote, according to Daily Kos.

The district has been represented by a Republican since 1978.

Former presidents Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both won the district in the last two presidential elections, but the 18-point margin in Tuesday's election is indicative of a growing blue wave in the area.

Good question. Same sort of question could be asked about Republican districts in California. Being red in an intensely blue state doesn’t count for much. Sort of like exotic display pieces.

It isn’t even really a matter of being red in a deep blue seat.

What have Republicans done with nay seat that they have held anywhere?

It seems like the only reason they are ever elected is becaise they are “not Democrats”, but I’m not even sure that’s an accurate description of them.

You would be hard pressed to find more than a few thousand Republicans on all of Long Island ... >snip< ... Long Island along with NYC is a Democrat stronghold.

Ummmm, this is patently untrue. As a lifelong LI resident among nearly 3 million in the Nassau/Suffolk region, (excluding, of course, Queens and Brooklyn, which are geographically part of LI but politically part of NYC), I can attest that there are *plenty* of Republicans on Long Island.

District by district, Suffolk County went overwhelmingly for Trump (except the sparsely populated, but rich, leftist Hamptons), while Hillary won Nassau County by a slim margin mainly due to urban population centers such as Hempstead and the uber-rich Northwest Shore.
