The most liberal appeals court in America could soon be getting a Republican makeover if President Trump and Senate GOP leaders are able to fill seven open seats with conservative picks.
Standing in their way is a wall of Democrats hellbent on protecting the long-standing leftward lean of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
The stakes are sky high because of the size, caseload and clout of the court. If Trump is successful in getting young, ideologically conservative nominees through the confirmation process, he could significantly alter the courts DNA for decades to come.
Adding seven conservatives to the court would very much affect its ideological balance, Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law, told Fox News. It would push the court much further to the right.
If Trump wants to take advantage of this opportunity, he'll have to act soon. So far, he's only made two nominations.
Based in San Francisco, the 9th Circuit covers nine western states, has 29 active judgeships and seven vacancies, with an eighth coming in August. Its current political split is 16-6.
The Ninth Circuit is out in left field and has been since a major expansion of the court allowed President Carter and Senator Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) to pack its left wing in the late 1970s, Kent Scheidegger, legal director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, said.
He told Fox News the court hasnt been balanced politically ever since.

The 9th Circuit court has 9 out of 10 cases over turned replacement indeed purge the liberal idiots.
FDR tried to expand the Supreme Court so his new picks would turn the majority to the Left. The Congress he owned, didn't let it happen. If the most powerful(not best)President in our history couldn't expand the Court, a future democrat president won't be able to do it, even with Mitch McConnell's help.
Why do Deme get away with the things they do? Simple they realize the way to get what they want is to stick together something the Liberterians need to learn big time...
Let’s see if the Never-Trump crowd FINALLY gets it that he’s the best thing that happened to conservatism since Reagan.
The most overturned court in the history of the Republic.
Breaking the black robe mafia. Best election ever.
“Standing in their way is a wall of Democrats”
I thought the “Nuke” option was in effect.
We can only hope Trump gets 8 years to make appointments as these truly effect our lives as these Leftist’s judges legislate.
there is no justice in the 9th circuit .. as any lawyer familiar with it knows and will acknowledge (in private)
pray that President Trump can repair this horrible horrible court with some good quality appointments
(ps: another thing, the 9th should be split up.... it covers at least a third of the country... ridiculous )
GO TRUMP !!!!!!
I believe the things now holding up the process is the 30 hour debate rule and the fight over the blue slip gentlemans agreement.
the 9th is overturned so much I wonder if it is better to leave them alone. Just thinking.
Yup, nuke all judge picks. No question!
Just use the nuclear option in the Senate to push them all through. Harry Reid did it and all the Democrats cheered. They can hardly complain now.
Idaho is too good for them for the new home of "The 10th". Fr-er's have pontificated someplace very cold and rainy in Washington or even colder and snowier in Alaska.
Perhaps split the 9th in 1/2 and send them up to the new 10th, and then build them both back out...
Senate needs to stay in session 24 hours a day until the backlog of appointments is addressed. They want their 30 hours of debate then it needs to go on all day long.
The 9th is overturned a lot but most of its bad decisions never get so far as the USSC to be overturned.
The 9th circus may be reduced to a mere carnival?
