Paul Krugman: The Great Snake Oil Slump (Why Trump's Tax Cuts are a Political Fizzle)
New York Times ^ | 04/20/2018 | Paul Krugman

Posted on 04/20/2018 7:13:33 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. A G.O.P. presidential candidate loses the popular vote, but somehow ends up in the White House anyway. Despite his dubious legitimacy, his allies in Congress take advantage of his election to ram through a huge tax cut that blows up the budget deficit while disproportionately benefiting the wealthy. While the big bucks go to the big incomes, however, the tax bill does throw some crumbs at the middle class, and Republicans try to sell the bill as a boon to working families.

So far this account applies equally to George W. Bush and Donald Trump. But then the story takes a turn. The Bush sales job was effective: While the 2001 tax cut wasn’t overwhelmingly popular, more people approved than disapproved, and it provided the G.O.P. with at least a modest political boost. But the Trump tax cut was unpopular from the start — in fact, less popular than past tax hikes.

And this tax cut doesn’t seem to be winning more support over time. Most Americans say they don’t see any positive effect on their paychecks. Public approval of the tax cut seems, if anything, to be falling rather than rising. And Republicans have pretty much stopped even mentioning the bill on the campaign trail.

Which raises the question: Why doesn’t snake oil sell like it used to?

In the past, deficit hypocrisy was an important weapon in the G.O.P. political arsenal. Both parties talked about fiscal responsibility, but only Democrats practiced it, actually paying for policy initiatives like Obamacare. Yet Democrats were punished for doing the right thing — remember “they’re taking $500 billion from Medicare”? — while Republicans seemingly paid no price for their cynicism. Voters focused on the extra money in their pockets,

The author loses believability in the second sentence, where he starts with, “Despite his dubious legitimacy...”. Waste no time reading further.

They aren’t. The problem is the fake media is pushing fake polling to valid their pre set poltical agenda.

Look at the consumer confidence numbers for a real idea of how average US Voters are feeling. They media cannot fake those.

Nope

Read what he won it for. International Trade.

He is like Bill Nye using accomplishments in a narrow field to claim a fake authority in areas he is not actually qualified on.

it like saying “Since I have a Master in Political Science so I am a world authority on Election laws.”

No, you actually not are.

Krugman does another article spewing the
“Crumbs” liberal propaganda talking point.
Those “crumbs” can be a mortgage payment, or a couple of car payments, something for the kids, or maybe a getaway vacation.
But, Krugman must be Krugman to keep his liberal cred alive.

Wow, Krugman doesn’t even pretend to hide he is a bitter hater and loser anymore. And he is not even embarrassed by all his stupid and failed predictions.
That slimeball has no shame, so typical of a rabid leftist.

——Well, he won a Nobel Prize in Economics....

Well he did indeed win a NP in a very small specialty of international banking....

Which means he knows almost nothing about US economics

I bet he didn’t watch Trump’s Roundtables in W.Virginia and Hialeah, FL. last week. The stories of people and businesses benefiting from the tax cuts were amazing. Google them to see what the MSM is really not reporting.

Well, he won a Nobel Prize in Economics....

That puts him on a level with Al Gore, Barack Hussein Obama, and Yasser Arafat. I knew Krugman personally, and he was even more revolting, arrogant, and irrational in person than he seems in writing.

I am convinced that if Krugman had ever been entrusted with enough authority to be appointed to a position of real responsibility, he would have been in the same boat that Comey and McCabe find themselves now.

He is an unmitigated liar and political whore, who wrote some important work on location economics. His other stuff, externalities in international trade, etc., not so much. His Nobel should have been awarded many years from now.

Given his shameless shilling for democrats, he would probably have disqualified himself before it was ever awarded.

The first sentence lets you know there’s no need to read any further. There is no popular vote for president so “losing” it means nothing about one’s legitimacy. Trump won the legitimate voting state by state, under the rules. There’s nothing dubious about winning by the rules.

Well, he won a Nobel Prize in Economics....

And the same Nobel society awarded Obama the Nobel Peace Prize... Was that before or after he and Holder started running guns to Narco-Terrorists, who specialized in murdering innocent civilians, real journalist, prosecutors, and judges?

"It really does now look like President Donald J. Trump, and markets are plunging. When might we expect them to recover? A first-pass answer is never… So we are very probably looking at a global recession, with no end in sight." Paul Krugman of the New York Times the day after the election.
