Pres. Trump Calls on Senate to End Filibuster Rule
One America News ^ | March 23, 2018

In order to prevent the omnibus situation from ever happening again, the president called for the Senate to end the filibuster rule.

There are many classic examples of the famous Senate filibuster, or the practice in which a lawmaker will speak against a bill he doesn’t like for hours, even days until the legislation is finally shelved.

Why does President Trump want to do away with a key piece of Senate filibuster rules?

The answer goes back to a Democrat who occupied the White House more than a century ago.

Back in 1917, then-President Woodrow Wilson found himself unable to move his agenda forward due to seemingly endless filibusters in Congress.

Tired of waiting, Wilson urged the Senate to come up with a way to pass bills without deliberation.

What they came up with, and what is now blocking major Trump administration reforms, is known as the cloture rule, which sets the threshold for a law to pass at 60 votes. This is far higher than a simple Senate majority of 51.

As President Trump explains it — “eight Dems totally control the U.S. Senate

I’d vote for a democrat before I’d vote to reelect Paul Ryan.

Do they need 51 votes to change Senate rules?

Trump has no one to blame but himself for this travesty. He could have used his veto power as leverage with Congress to help craft the bill more to his liking. Instead he let Congress have free reign to write whatever bill they wanted, and this is the result.

...As President Trump explains it — “eight Dems totally control the U.S. Senate...

This is a two edged sword. We may need 8 Conservatives after 2018 or 2020, if we can find 8, to stop lunatic democrat oppressive gun legislation. But, a liberal majority could make that rule change themselves.

2 senators per state. Majority of red states. GOP will end up with a majority once the Senate is reformed.

There is zero chance that the senate will ditch the filibuster rule at this point. No Dim would vote for it and there are several Republicans who would oppose it, some specifically to thwart Trump’s agenda just as that was the intent of the Omnibus just signed into law.

It bugs me that Trump is dwelling on something that has no chance of being done.

I’d vote for a democrat before I’d vote to reelect Paul Ryan.

When Boehner left, I knew - and said - that Ryan would be even worse. I wish I had been wrong.

It is called division of powers.

He didn't want to divide the GOP right before the midterm elections.

Oh, don’t worry, the Senate will eliminate the filibuster altogether . . . the minute Chuck Schumer is the Majority Leader.

Mitch has his head so far up the Chinese governments ass, we’ll never get anything accomplished while he is in leadership.
