Self-driving vehicles.... dangerous?
freerepublic.com ^ | 03/20/2018 | self

Now that an Arizona woman was killed after being struck by a self-driving Uber vehicle many questions come to mind not that they shouldn’t.

We live in Pittsburgh, lots of hills, and lots of snow and ice.

There are times when we have difficulty controlling a car in those conditions (our weather forecast is for 6 inches of snow later today and tonight).

A couple months ago my wife, after driving to and from work in terrible road conditions, wondered how a self-driving car would handle it. What do you think of these self-driving cars navigating snow and ice?

Too much testosterone and a big 4 wheel drive PU/SUV can be a bad combination.

It was a big SAC base with over 7,000 Air Force personnel so many of them had never seen snow before. As soon as they arrived they would go out and buy a 4 x 4 thinking they needed it and would eventually end up stuck.

I used our FWD vehicles (Taurus SHO and a Plymouth Grand Voyager) and in the 7.5 years there neither of us became stuck, and a few times I had to drive while the snow was still two or three feet on the roads.

I did purchase a 1988 Toyota 4-Runner (V-6) so I could hunt in the Winter. It was the only way to drive out into the wilderness with all that snow. That was the only 4x4 I ever owned and I sold it when we left ND.

Hey! I’m a grandpa also (7), AND my
name is Dave!

Yep. Still love driving a fast car.
But have learned where to drive fast
where it’s legal. Pretty much stick
to speed limits on public roads though.
Tickets cost $$.
I still get a burst of the ‘ol testosterone
once in awhile;).

Self driving cars ....

_______

Dana Perino just said we ought to pay people to sit in the back and be "back seat drivers".

I hope she was kidding.

"Ban automatic transmissions"

That has long been my proposal to weed out the incompetent.

They’ll be occupied shifting , unable to text ! It amazing how these folks “operate a motor vehicle” , if you want to call it that. Eyes glued to phone, oblivious as to what else is happening. Many times they are the folks doing 10-15 under the posted speed limit, in the left lane at that, lol.

We all do, however as you noted tickets, cost money in fines and higher insurance rates.

My last two company cars were a Taurus and Sable with front wheel drive. With both cars I had the combo rating.

Never needed chains in snow in California on I 80 and I 5.

Get into Oregone and had to put on chains and lost a lot of control.

DARPA was a “driver” for autonomous vehicles for military use.

I truly did not think that my last paragraph in that post required a sarcasm warning. Just goes to prove that on FR, a sarcasm tag is ALWAYS required.

How will an autonomous car park at the airport? A restaurant? How will it get you to your Talladega Speedway camp site?

The GM prototype has no steering wheel. Guess I better keep the old Winnebago if I want to go to a race.

85 in a modern car on the interstate is no issue. The idiots that have their cruise control set at 73 with their foot off the gas are the idiots. Drive or get over.
