Fearing a Utah 'coronation', 8 Republicans challenge Romney

Eight Republicans have stepped forward before a Thursday evening filing deadline to challenge former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in the Utah Senate race, including a state lawmaker who says an "establishment insider" can't fix problems in Washington.

Many of the candidates acknowledge the David-vs-Goliath nature of challenging the famous and popular Romney, but they say someone needs to keep the race to replace Republican Orrin Hatch from becoming a "coronation."

"I think he's just expecting to run away with this thing," Republican candidate Sam Parker said. "There are really motivated individuals who are going to do their best to force their way into the conversation."

That alone means Romney will win. Splitting the vote.

They need to huddle and agree on the most likely to win — the way the Democrats do. Vote splitting is a conservative curse.

Eight Republicans just mean they, due their egos and that their is eight of them, they’ll simply insure Romney wins the primary, even if he does not get a majority.

Why do Conservatives in so many states form a circle, shoot themselves and insure the RINO wins the primary?? Why in the hell can’t they get together, form a team, pick the best one and all get behind that one??? No. They shoot it out in a circle of suicide that leaves the RINO standing.

Hopefully they will be smart enough to get together well before the primary, and decide which one of them has the best chance of winning, and all throw their support behind that ONE.

But then they are republicans, so I doubt that they will be that smart. And the RNC and the Republican Machine will be against ‘anyone not Romney’ so they can’t expect national help.

Eight is enough to be certain that the opposition IS DIVIDED.

Yup, the ol' RINO divide and conquer scheme. I guess some Utah RINOs really want to guarantee Mittens as the victor.

Most of them are vanity candidates who don't have a chance of winning and won't get many votes.

Some are perennial candidates who are always running for something -- and losing.

The article and headline are deceptive, making people think something is going on when nothing is.

...Under the bylaws of the Republican Party of Utah, candidates seeking the party’s nomination are voted on at the party convention, which is scheduled for April 21, 2018.

Should a candidate receive 60 percent of the delegates’ votes, they win the nomination outright. Otherwise, the top two candidates advance to a June 26, 2018, primary election...

Same technique used to coronate Jeb! for the presidential primary. Alas there is no Trump in Utah. Romney has this one tied up. The sheep have spoken.

Thank you. Wonder why they would institute such a sensible rule, anyway? They are usually corrupt as all getout.

Probably to give the Mormon Establishment the advantage. If the Establishment isn’t unified, they allow voters to choose.

Some states do it the reverse of this; a primary first and then selection at convention if no one meets a threshold.

That’s not how it works in Utah. More candidates at the convention is better chance to deny Romney 60%. A primary isn’t scheduled unless no one gets 60%, and then only the top two compete.

Good to know. That’s better.

Eight is too many and will ensure a Romney corronation. Seven of the eight are probably paid by Romney or his backers.

That’s how the Bush League Republicans play the game.

Wrong! If there are that many challengers, then several of them are in it to take support away from the others, thus giving Romney the win. It’s deep state skullduggery.

Not quite. Utah has a party convention system, you need 60% I believe to win the nomination outright, elsewise the 2 top finishers (once it’s reduced to 2, one by one with the last place candidate eliminated on each successive ballot so it matters little how many challengers run) advancing to the primary.

You can also petition onto the primary ballot, Romney will certainly do that so he’ll be on the ballot even if he bombs out of the convention. We certainly don’t need multiple nobodies to do that, the article doesn’t say they are and I think it unlikely.

State Rep. Mike Kennedy appears to be the only viable challenger, we need him to make it on the primary ballot, ideally by winning at the convention or at least holding Romney under 60%.

It loops like the fix is in for scumbag
Romney.
A tried and true scam used by establishment thugs like Romney is to run as many unelectable opponents as possible
against yourself. This dilutes any viable anti-Romney opposition by sucking votes away, assuring the establishment candidate gets elected.
