An armed man took three hostages during an "active shooter situation" at a California veterans home Friday afternoon, a fire official said.

Earlier, it emerged the veterans home was on lockdown after reports of shots fired.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said officers responded to the Veterans Home of California in Yountville around 10:45 a.m. local time and a shelter-in-place order was issued.

This is so very sad.......just so sad. Four deaths and this in a place where the best of the best have been in active wars who never thought they’d hear gunshots there.

That this happened on a 615-acre campus, housing 1,000 unarmed veterans of all generations, with security consisting of fewer than 9 unarmed officers who aren’t even allowed to issue citations, isn’t a conversation Calif bureaucrats want to have. I can’t help but think that may be the reason this tragic and preventable situation has been kept so quiet today.

So sad.

Apparently the shooter had either been released or asked to leave treatment program on site. It’s not clear why he left, yet. He held more hostages but let them go while keeping these three.

The shooter hasn’t been identified yet.

I am not up to speed on this matter, and I am not a veteran, but I talked to a good friend of mine tonight (who is a veteran here in CA), and he said this was one of, if not the only STATE-RUN Veterans’ homes...therefore, no one was allowed to be armed according to CA law.

When I saw earlier that CHP was handling the matter, I wondered why, and when my friend mentioned the above it made sense as CHP has jurisdiction over all State buildings.

Just FYI, to hopefully add info to the discussion. Have been out of the news loop pretty much all evening.

If that's the case, it's a miracle that only 3 innocent lives were taken. Unless, of course, the 3 were specifically targeted!

You cannot blame anyone for this except the man who entered the “party” deceptively which is how he got in.

It would not have mattered if there were 100 officers there.

It’s been kept quiet for obvious reasons....hostage situations tensions are difficult enough without news media creating and revealing the situation. You never want to give a person who has taken hostages that leverage.

No matter the ‘story’ the entire situation is very sad and one which many tried to prevent and end it well...it didn’t unfortunately..and that can and does happen with unstable people regardless of efforts to prevent or stop from happening.

Thank you for your imput.

Very sad day for the vets there. I’m sure they knew the hostages who as I understand were mental health officals on site.

They are stupid enough to believe a government hit job on Vets will sway the vets for gun control. At least they were nice enough to kill older vets instead of school children this time. We can be thankful for that, if that is something to be thankful for.

A sorrowful thing. Caring for those we send to war when they come home is a complex and thorny dilemma. Being the mother of a combat vet has afforded me a chance to learn so much. In the end, I think these guys can heal each other. Degrees in psychology are interesting and useful, but not a substitute for experience.

All across the country there are small groups, started by vets themselves, working to help each other. They use dogs, wilderness trips, fishing, and all sorts of methods to bring them to recovery. These mostly go unnoticed by the general public, but they are successful. They work together as teams. I am in awe of them.

I pray for the souls of the four who died today.
