Trump’s Sudden Love of Gun Control Isn’t That Sudden
© 2018 National Review ^ | March 1, 2018 10:33 AM | By JIM GERAGHTY

Donald Trump, a Manhattan real-estate mogul who had traveled with his own personal security for years, had never really been a “gun guy.”

In his 2000 book, The America We Deserve, he wrote, “I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.”

Even in his remarks accepting the (NRA) endorsement, Trump made comments that suggested he found owning a lot of guns . . . kind of worrisome. “My sons are members,” Trump declared. “They have so many rifles, so many guns, that even I get concerned. I say, ‘That’s a lot!’”

Wednesday we learned that the Trump White House . . . might not be all that different from the Clinton White House on guns after all. During a meeting with Vice President Pence and senior senators . . .

Trump endorsed the Assault Weapons Ban. Trump endorsed background checks for private sales at gun shows. Trump endorsed raising the age to purchase firearms to 21. Trump declared the top priority of the NRA since Trump’s election, concealed-carry reciprocity, “will never pass.” (This bill would ensure that if you have a valid concealed-carry permit in your home state, you are allowed to carry a concealed weapon in any state.) Trump contended members of Congress were “petrified of the NRA” and that he was not. “They have great power over you people. They have less power over me.” Finally, Trump contradicted his own vice president’s assurances about due process and basically contended that the government should seize firearms from people it deems dangerous and go back and get legal justification later.

Raising the age on rifles in addition to AR15’s is gonna lose him Michigan. I guarantee it.

The best I can come up with is a judge: then a requirement to check with neighbors, with police, with local records and newspapers, with doctors.

So just flush HPPA down the toilet then.

Exactly.

THAT which you said covers what happened at Parkland.

Basic policing was a FAIL, as was the typical GUN FREE ZONE school which extended an invitation to this guy.

State laws defining mental illness require a “record”, on an individual. Due to years of incompetence, there was none in this case.

Remember Trump plays rope-a-dope: he offers the opposition everything they want, in a way that they can’t take “yes” for an answer. Having neutralized their own arguments, he wins his thru their self-imposed impotence.

Oh, yes, trust Trump! It's 3D chess, no 4D, no 5D chess!

The "afraid of the NRA" comment told me everything I needed to know. This President is not going to protect my rights, and looks like he is going to infringe them. Therefore, I will prepare for two events: 1) civil war, and 2) not to vote for Trump in 2020.

His sons need to talk some sense into him on this subject

Good grief, he’s probably packing heat every day, after all he has a concealed carry permit. POTUS thinks out loud, by that I mean he says exactly what thoughts he is entertaining. Whether he ultimately adopts those thoughts is an entirely different matter.

I don't know what all the positioning is - opening offers, 4D chess, DACA 2...

I'll wait to see what actually happens.

I am pretty much a single issue voter, though, and that issue is the 2nd Amendment. Infringe and you'll never get my vote again.

His sons should remind him that humans only have 2 arms, and can thus only use 2 guns at any one time - if they are very talented. Most (as in 99.999%) can only use 1 at a time...so what does it matter if you have 1, 5, 10 or 248?

I’m drawing a blank on HPPA. My search engine couldn’t find it. And a FR keyword search didn’t turn it up.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, but only in states where there are hunters (every state). His elitism and ego are going to bury his chances of a second term.

Trump already announced how to kill any gun bill.

Put National Reciprocity in it.

Let's see if Scalise took the hint.

5 weeks ago everyone was sure he caved on DACA.

He is playing poker.

He needs them to embrace gun confiscation for the midterms.

In essence he did declare it would not pass..

Since full bill would not pass with CC in it, what makes you, Trump, or anyone think it will pass as a separate bill??

—Trump wants some sort of action...Period. So he said to Scalise, the one guy personally impacted by a shooter in the room, that he should not include that provision in the bill because Trump wants bill to pass...

Good points. This is surely a mess and somehow I sense Ivanka is behind this change in rhetoric and attitude. I’m very worried about it. I honestly didn’t see this coming.

Even a broken clock, etc.

Trump is right on a lot of things, such as taxes, business regulations, etc.

But he’s a city boy and he grew up in and around a place where even the GOP tends to not respect the 2d Amendment.

We can pretend he’s playing a long game or we can remind him that his supporters believe in the 2d Amendment.

I prefer the latter.

Well fear not. Mitch McConnell just announced all gun bills in the senate are being put on hold indefinitely and they are moving on to sex trafficking or some such.
