San Jose Mercury ^ | January 17, 2018 | Ethan Baron

With the debate over immigration to the U.S. as fiery as ever, a new analysis suggests that Silicon Valley would be lost without foreign-born technology workers.

About 71 percent of tech employees in the Valley are foreign born, compared to around 50 percent in the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward region, according to a new report based on 2016 census data.

Unions? Really? How much of the private sector is unionized? Do you even know?

That is really hard to believe as I know techs who are out of work due to these horrible H1NB visa scum. How about reaching out to all those hundreds of workers who were laid off in CA and Fla by Disney? Seriously, I just dont buy this and never will.

Is there some place where they post that they're available? Given we post to all public job sites including LinkedIn, newspapers and every conceivable method, it's unusual they're not applying for 6 figure jobs.

In most cases they're paid at or above other workers.

Have you checked to see if they are paid for hours worked? I was in places where the company was billed for 40 hours even though they worked 60-70.

Re: How’s that Common Core program working in US schools? Tech companies can’t find enough citizen graduates?

While Common Core has helped lower the performance of US students, that’s somewhat of a red herring.

There are many, many experienced proven skilled American IT people who escaped the school system before Common Core and are currently unemployed or under employed. They are bypassed in favor of cheaper, younger, desperate, compliant H-1B’s. By the age of 35 an American IT person is considered by employers and HR to be over-the-hill regardless of their skills.

re:No connection. Plenty of highly skilled IT workers born in the USA. H1-B is all about age discrimination, cheap labor and inherent bias against Americans. Once you get an foreign manager or director in charge, they only like to hire from their own countries.

The quality differential b/w american born and H1-B is huge. We few Americans do most of the work, clean up after them and eventually get replaced. They rarely can problem solve themselves out of a paper bag. But they look good to senior execs on paper... and only on paper.

How True ...but damn they’re CHEAP.

Of course large industries are doing it. Who do you think the government works for? You? Me? the American Middle-Class? Of course not.

Business is interested in squeezing every bit of work out of their employees at the lowest possible price as well. In order to do that they have brought in a slave class of IT workers because unlike restaurants and construction contractors they can’t pay illegals under the table in cash. They get their friends in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to pay off the Congress & Senate to expand the guest worker and Visa programs.

Don’t be naive. It doesn’t take too much critical thinking to figure it out.You can’t hire Americans at your company because you have to compete with other companies that also are robbing the American labor force with the Visa program. You pay about HALF what an IT professional should be receiving. The proof is the fact that 71% of all IT graduate natives do not work in IT, but 75% of IT professionals are foreign born.

No more proof is needed. Eliminate the program wages will rise and Americans will fill those rolls.

I don’t even think it’s about wages. After I was laid off I was willing take a big pay cut. No takers and I have many awards to my name and great resume. It goes way beyond how much people are paid. There is an inherent bias against white middle aged males in tech. HR folks, which are primarily staffed by the young and “diverse” ... hate us.

That is the point. The pay and market rates are depressed by thousands and thousands of entry level and higher IT workers flooded in from low wage SHITHOLE countries! They are indentured servants who take their $60k a year, send half home and live ten to a house. meanwhile they Try as hard as they can to impregnate their wives and drop a few anchor babies to prevent deportation in the event they are unable to put 80 hours a week at the local IT coding mine!

No different than the local home builder who hires a subcontractor for roofing who in turn hires day labor illegals at pennies on the dollar for what an American worker can afford to work. The only difference is your lobbying firm makes it legal through a Visa program. It is cheaper to pay off a Congressman or many than it is to pay a fair wage.

There is a reason why you can't hear a lick of English on a nonunion construction site or even a kitchen of a restaurant in LA, SFO, NYC, Chicago, Dallas or even places like Columbus or Cleveland. There is a reason why you go to a WalMart after 10pm and you think you are in Calcutta, Tijuana or Chengdu. Even when that WalMart is 90 miles from a major city.

We are importing our demise as a culture and you and your company are unwittingly, or not, helping!

Business is interested

I am business, as are thousands of other conservatives... I'm telling you how it actually works, not speculation.

It seems baffling to me those jobs are so readily available to find but “no” Amnericans apply. What about your screening service? Are they perhaps working from another agenda? Need to drill a lot deeper on this because it is patently unbelievable on the suface

Every company is different. I’m willing to believe him. He has no reason to not be truthful. Now, full on tech companies DO discriminate against Americans. I’ve been part of them. I’ve seen it first hand. After a lay off I got to experience it personally. So, this is a “Your Mileage May Vary” scenario. Some companies practice illegal hiring practices, some don’t. Tech companies definitely screen out middle aged white USA born men, no matter how skilled they are. It’s a fact.

I never said that, but I was providing a perspective that was actually factual. It may be the minority, but based on the number of large companies my family and friends work for or run, it's a consistent viewpoint.
