Facebook is a ‘living, breathing crime scene,’ says one former tech insider

With more than 2 billion users, Facebook's reach now rivals that of Christianity and exceeds that of Islam. However, the network's laser focus on profits and user growth has come at the expense of its users, according to one former Facebook manager who is now speaking out against the social platform.

"One of the things that I saw consistently as part of my job was the company just continuously prioritized user growth and making money over protecting users," the ex-manager, Sandy Parakilas, who worked at Facebook for 16 months, starting in 2011, told NBC News. During his tenure at Facebook, Parakilas led third-party advertising, privacy and policy compliance on Facebook's app platform.

"Facebook is a living, breathing crime scene for what happened in the 2016 election — and only they have full access to what happened," said Tristan Harris, a former design ethicist at Google. His work centers on how technology can ethically steer the thoughts and actions of the masses on social media and he's been called "the closest thing Silicon Valley has to a conscience" by The Atlantic magazine.

It's not just your name and age. Facebook can also track your likes, the content you write, your purchases and your location.

McNamee said the formula simply isn't good for democracy.

"All the content is stuff that you like, right? It's what they think you like. But what it really is, is stuff that serves their business model and their profits," he said. "And making you angry, making you afraid, is really good for Facebook's business. It is not good for America. It's not good for the users of Facebook."

How many divorces, job firings ,suicides, and overall misery has this social media been responsible for? I’d really like to know.

That is EXACTLY what I experienced.

A criminal in the UK was trying to victimize a family member online.

I took reams of evidence directly to their Director of Security.

He could not have cared less. People get killed over stuff like this and so long as the checks continue to clear Facebook is cool with it.

Facebook is Evil!

I believe that 60% of all divorce filings now specifically mention Facebook.

I personally know five people to whom that was integral to their divorce.

This tool hasn’t worked there in six years, FCOL. I do not use Facebook but if they abuse users then the users are free to quit.

Deactivated and deleted my account months ago. Best decision in quite some time.

Zero. People that do bad things are gonna do bad things. Some people putting their evidence on Facebook doesn’t mean Facebook caused the bad thing, it just gave them a tool. It’s like blaming SUVs for crashes, drivers crash, SUVs just crumple things after the driver screws up.

Uh huh. I have 5 accounts, so I wonder how many of the 2B are unique.

It’s a dumpster fire.

I use it to make sure no one I know is dead, and to occasionally let everyone know I’m not.

Outside of that, the place is tacky, trashy, and just unreadable.

I was just thinking the same thing. But I only have four.

How did you delete it? I never see that option. I have deactivated the account from time to time to time to take a break from it. I tend to get into way too many debates with idiots.

How many are fake? I had an old email account hijacked and used to make a facebook account. Facebook wouldn’t delete it.

Depends on what you call fake. I made all 5 of them. Only one has my real name.

In the sense you made them they’re real. I’ve never made a single account but I got facebook emails and had an account. I suspect I’m not the only one.

As far as counting users, four of yours and 1 of mine = 1 real user.
