TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese public broadcaster NHK issued a false alarm about a North Korean missile launch on Tuesday, just days after a similar gaffe caused panic in Hawaii, but it managed to correct the error within minutes.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the mistake.

NHK's 6.55 p.m. alert said: "North Korea appears to have launched a missile ... The government urges people to take shelter inside buildings or underground."

The same alert was sent to mobile phone users of NHK's online news distribution service.

In five minutes, the broadcaster put out another message correcting itself...

I am usually the first and most vehement to laugh at conspiracy theories, but there might be something odd here. A feckless bureaucrat in Hawaii is one thing, but that *AND* Japan, with the Norks getting frisky...

Japan corrected its mistake within 5 minutes.

Hawaii attempted to spread panic to the federal government (read that as attempted to provoke Trump into pressing his big red button, because hey, if it takes stating a nuclear war to impeach Trump it would be worth it) for 38 minutes.

I bet they delivered that false message cheaper and faster than the Americans.

Is it possible that there is an idea to have so many false alarms as to render people skeptical about real attacks?

My top guess:

This is cover for the Hawaii screwup. Someone with pull has convinced the Japanese to do this in order to provide cover for what happened in Hawaii. Someone doesn’t want us to look too carefully at what happened in Hawaii. Seems far too “convenient” for the timing of this event.

... removing tinfoil hat now.

My second guess is coincidence. They happen all the time. You never see a purple car on the road. But if you paint your car purple, you will start seeing them. Why? Because you are now very aware of purple cars.

Related: I was watching “Madam Secretary” on hulu. Haven’t finished watching the episode yet, so I don’t know how it turns out, but so far they are making a case that the President is nuts and needs to be removed from office. How convenient that this matches the huge push by libs/media that Trump is nuts and needs to be removed from office. They are putting this out there so that the concept will not seem so far-fetched to the sheeple.

Why do I watch this crap? Because I want to know what the media/libs are thinking and how they are trying to manipulate us. During Hitlery’s time as SOS and during the campaign it was a pretty reliable source for finding out what their tactics were and what memes they were pushing.

I wonder if those who think Trump will cause a nuclear war thought about the fact that Trump didn’t react to the alert by punching his “big button”.

I don't doubt it. I think a ‘Breaking Bad’ type of series, based on the Clintons and their criminal progression would be a hit, if done right. I know House of Cards was sort of like that, but the truth is probably worse than that series depicted.

Or if they thought of what Kennedy did in the Cuban Missile crisis, and the brinkmanship operative then. Sometimes you just can't find an acceptable negotiated solution without drawing a sharp line in the sand first.

Ron Nessen: Now, what we plan to do is this: Should you make any physical movements that can be construed as out of the ordinary, [Ford takes a pipe from his coat pocket and puts it in his mouth] we will take specific action to see to it that others will view them as normal everyday behavior. [Nessen takes a pipe from his own pocket, puts it in his mouth and imitates Ford as he mistakenly lights the bottom of the pipe]
Gerald Ford: Mm-hmm.
Ron Nessen: This is a perfect example, Sir.
