These deadbeat welshers want taxpayers (many of whom couldn’t afford to send their own children to college) to cough up more tax money to pay off their loans.

They, not the tapayers, benefited from the loan, it is their responsibility to pay the loan off.

Plus, in many cases much of the loan money didn’t go to college expenses, it went to pay for cars, vacations, entertainment, hobbies, electronic toys, etc.

The government should get out of the student loan business - no loans and no guarantees.

And it should aggressively collect all unpaid student loan money that it guaranteed from from the wages of the deadbeats (if they actually work).

have loans older than three years be dischargeable in bankruptcy and then the SCHOOL is responsible for the balance for giving a bogus degree.

None of this was an issue until Obama nationalized all the student loan programs. A student loan should be between a student and a lender, and fall under normal bankruptcy law, like any other debt. When lenders are exposed to risk of default they will tighten up the loans they make

The same way they respond when someone doesn’t pay their taxes.

Student loans can’t be discharged in bankruptcy. There’s no ‘safe zone’. It’s almost like the real world or somethin’.

I paid off ALL my student loans in 2 years. Not a typo. All those times I took odd jobs to pay my university tuition from disc jockey for a strip club to taking care of the phone calls for an escort service. And juggle school plus girlfriends. No stupid Uber or Lyft. The only thing that made me uncomfortable was when my parents asked why I didnt ask any money from them lol

In all honesty there should be an approved list of degrees that are eligible for financial aid.

Student loans should be offered in a completely private market. I guarantee US Big Bank Inc. will be more likely to offer a loan to a student in Engineering of Business Administration than in Left-Handed Lesbian Third World Oppression Studies ... and on much better terms.

And I am sure you went to a state funded college in the 70s where you were only responsible for paying 15% max of the costs. You should see what we were expected to pay.

I am not saying you are, but your generation should be careful about biting the hand that will be feeding them.

Why not?
Thanks to deficit spending, we are spending money they have not even earned.
The whole thing needs to end.

I totally agree. I will accept that in exchange for getting rid of Social Security and Medicare and exposing the Baby Boomers to the harsh reality of the market.

Like Rush always says, I’m the Mayor of Realville.

Truth of the matter is that sooner or later these loans will be forgiven.

Only question is, who will get elected to power by proposing that?

If certain FReepers are wiling to ride their principles into decades of Liberal serfdom, so be it. I’m not one of them.

Graduated in 2011. I only used the Pell grant once and it was only for 5K. That’s nothing. 2017 and my classmates are still paying for theirs. I just didnt want to hear their sob stories. Even my frat mates were amazed and they were asking me for advice on their finances. I think they were more interested on which strip club I dj’d .

And therein lies the bold hypocrisy of the boomers: I’ve got my socialism, but I don’t want you to have your’s.

some of these diploma mills should be off limits to loans. You can practically outsource someone else doing your coursework.

There is one slight difference between SS/MC and Student Loans.

SS/MC are acts of armed robbery; our money is taken from us at gunpoint to fund that Ponzi scheme. Even those of us who have spent decades opposing the system.

Student loans are taken on voluntarily. Nobody put a gun to your head and demanded that you take out half a million dollars of student loans to study Gay Lesbian and Transgender Oppressed Basketweaving.
