>Feds recoup their costs from the person in debt......One of the most inane posts Ive ever seen here.
More correctly they recover the value of the loan + interest and penalties. Not hard to when they can garnish wages and seize assets without a court order. This collection activity always costs more than they gain but due to the severity of it, people are terrified of not paying their student loans thus it keeps most people from defaulting.
Actually, that is simply not true. You and many others of our generations bought into the lie about social security somehow being an account with 'your' money in it. The Supreme Court, however has had a few words to say on the subject. Despite all the rhetoric, lies, and propaganda, there is no account with your name on it. You do not have any exercisable interest in any moneys retained by the government in the name of "social security". You have no rights to any money contained in the program. If you do, perchance, happen to collect some cash under the program consider yourself lucky, because that's all you are. You are lucky that you made it to the other side of the ponzi scheme before it collapsed. WooHoo!
The taxes you pay that you consider "social security" taxes are just another tax on your income, like the rest of the taxes you pay. Fortunately, there is at least a cut off point for SS, so there is actually a limit of how much the government can steal from you in that particular line item, but in the long run it hardly matters, because you'll get whatever the government decides to give you. If you're unlucky enough to live on the other side of the ponzi scheme, where means testing eliminates anything you might have expected to get, well, that's just too bad, because you haven't grounds to sue the government because you have no legal interest to it.
The fact that you've bought the lie being sold to you will mean you'll whine and moan about not getting "your money", but bitching about it, is about as far as you'll be able to go with it, unless you really are ready to start letting the government cash in on some of its well-deserved unintended consequences. Otherwise, you can bitch all you want, and I'll sit there and laugh my ass off, because I know it is a scam, and I know they don't "owe" me a dime. I don't see the point in living in a dream world.
It is time to end this Leftist odyssey...
If student loans were forgiven with the stipulation that you had to be paying on it for at least 5 years and steadily employed for 5 years then that would free up billions of dollars to be spent on houses and other goods. That money right now is being fed to banks, government and universities.
You still miss the point.
In order to give these "mush for brains" college grads $20, $40, or $60 thousand dollars they have to TAKE it from people who were smart enough to avoid the debt trap or who worked hard and paid off their own debt.
Why does a mushy headed college student deserve that money any more than me or my neighbors?
The answer is that none of us deserve it.
The main reason college costs are out of control is because of the government making college loan money easily available and driving up demand.
That is how colleges can pay people like Elizabeth Warren $450,000 a year to lecture one class.
Get the government money out of college education and costs will stop their meteoric rise because colleger will be forced to control costs and give value for the money they charge students.
I paid full boat for my kids. Im not happy about this truth of large scale insolvency of many kids who are unemployable but owe huge debts for student loans. But its the way to proceed in my opinion.
Agree.
Not only do I know It’s not “my” money in “my” account but, I know it is a promissory obligation, which has as much value as any promissory note ever does, derived from the taxes I paid into the system. It is not a loan insofar as I am not getting something fronted to me by the taxpayers.
As to the right to any money contained in the system, I’ll consider myself lucky if the government doesn’t steal what I have saved in my 401K and IRA to “invest” it in, “the children” which “are our future”!
College tech courses are not necessary, most of what they teach can be learned in HS VO/TECH schools. IF we still had them. And less focus was put on Jocks who produce nothing and hog resources.
Hubby and I both went to VO/TECH HS, his electronics courses qualified him as as building grade Code electrician. Mine for Secretary for our generation. With the option of College prep path. But LIBERALS cut Wood, Metal, Auto shop classes, sewing, food, home making classes in favor of Jocks, art and music. Now the art/music is threatened. Jocks still are #1.
Since this was Vietnam era, most HS grads males were Draft bait no one would hire. You either volunteered or were drafted. 20 yrs career Navy, teaching what he learned in HS and repairing comm gear both on ship and in planes. Then College for ED degree to teach the same in Jr. College, ended as Dept chair.
Looks like you’re trying to blame boomers for the poor choices made by millenials. That’s pure, unadulterated leftism.
