Sam's Club closes hundreds of stores nationwide [260]

Walmart (WMT) is closing hundreds of Sam's Club stores nationwide, according to numerous media reports.

Jessica Buckner, an audit team lead at a Sam's Club location in Anchorage, told local TV station KTVA that all Alaska stores are closing as part of a larger downsizing across the U.S. "From what I heard, there's over 260 stores that have been closed down," she said.

The wholesale clubs' official closure date is Jan. 26, Buckner said.

The closures also affect stores in New Jersey, upstate New York, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. In some locations, per social media, people showed up to work only to be told that their location was closing, with nearly no advance notice.

Sam's Club did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The chain, which competes with Costco (COST), has more than 650 locations employing more than 100,000 people, with an average of 175 employees per store, according to the company.

No formal announcement had been posted Thursday morning by Sam's Club, but the company acknowledged the closures on Twitter with a general statement.

The company drew criticism from people on Twitter who objected to the lack of notice about the closings.

My wife loves going to Costco although it's a bit out of the way. Personally, I hate going there, but then I pretty much hate shopping. The food samples they give out make it more bearable.

I must admit the prices are great. We got a beautiful standing rib roast for Christmas family dinner for a song.

“You’ll still be able to shop online and in other places.....................”

The better not pull that crap. The next closest Sam’s is about 50 miles away. We didn’t join so we could shop online.

Some lawyer will get rich by doing a class action lawsuit “representing” Sam’s Club members. He’ll get the money, and the members will get nothing.

"I cannot believe how many times I have gone into a Walmart to look for a national product they routinely stock only to find they are completely out... and for weeks at a time! National brands, not some obscure off-brand item."

Yup. I agree. It's baffling that I exit the store with 20% of my grocery list unfilled. My list contained only the items I had previously bought there.

Ahh yes. Racist Rosalind Brewer, another affirmative action "success story". She herself bailed last year with her golden parachute after running Sams Club into the ground.

It's shameful that Walmart would allow racism and incompetence to destroy the livelihood of thousands of people. It's a tough lesson, but doubtful the fools who set it into motion learned it.

"Mobile’s Costco is the closets to Destin. A bit far......................"

Funny. It was a few years back that I was surprised to read that the Destin Wal-mart was the #1 in the USA and our (Mobile, Tillman's Corner) was #2.

Walmart Employee Announcement

We have good news and bad news...

First the good news. We will be giving bonuses and raising the pay of all employees effective next week.

Now the bad news. We will be closing half our stores and you will no longer have a job, effective immediately.

Good. I cancelled my membership, see below:

You are not alone. I cancelled as well after that racist CEO Brewer exposed her soul.

She ultimately stepped down and is now COO of Starbuck's.

I've never spent a dime in Starbuck's and this guarantees I never will.

I thought I read earlier that Walmart was giving bonuses and raising wages because of the new tax law. Is this the outcome of that?

Thanks, I didn't know that.

Sam's Club CEO Out Amid Tough Costco Battle

"Though Brewer made the unusual step of leaving before lining anything new up, suggesting Wal-Mart was looking for a change, Brewer can take solace in that former Sam’s Club CEOs often land well: her predecessors include McMillon and Brian Cornell, now CEO of Target."

I shop at Costco now.

Costco is a huge political donor for the leftists. Sam's has not been as one-sided, regardless of that current idiot CEO.

I like Sam’s best of the big 3, but BJs is a block away, and my wife prefers Costco a short drive farther, so in light of not shelling out upwards of $300/yr on bulk-store memberships Sam’s went unrenewed.

Here's a list of closings rounded up from local media reports and Sam's Club employees who contacted Business Insider. The list will be updated as we learn of additional locations.

Say what you want, but I refuse to pay for the ‘privilege’ to spend money at your retail establishment. Especially when I can go on line and get a better price and have it delivered to me.

Possibly related, all Walmart stores in eastern Idaho have changed store hours from 24/7 to 6 AM to midnight. The reason is claimed to be "optimizing labor". It may also be minimizing theft. One big impact is going to the the midnight EBT shoppers who fill up their carts on the last day of the month, then checkout at the stroke of midnight when the EBT card is "recharged". Walmart has staffed up for that evening for many years.
