A young man from my town in NJ was one of the dozen or so Americans killed fighting for Rhodesia as one of the “Crippled Eagles”; they saw this as a war against communism first and foremost after the loss in Vietnam, and fought alongside non-communist blacks against Mugabe.
We allowed our media to frame the Bush War strictly along racial lines..
I used to work with a Black lady from Zimbabwe. She said the populace would welcome the White farmers back with open arms,if they were allowed back. That was 10 years ago. She always looked forward to the day Bob dines with the devil. I emailed her, recently but she was of the opinion that nothing much would change, with the new leader. Hope she is wrong.
Next thing they knew, one of Amin's followers showed up, with soldiers, and claimed the business. Then all the Indians were dispossessed and thrown out of the country. The guy's family fled to the UK with just the clothes on their back.
A few years later, they get a letter saying All Is Forgiven and they can come back and start up the business again. It seems that the new owners, knowing nothing of replenishment, sold out whatever was in the store and then left when the walls were bare.
Tongue somewhat in cheek, I asked him if his dad went back. He paused, and I could see everything from "You gotta be kidding" to "Are you freaking nuts?" go through his mind. He recovered and just mildly/diplomatically said, "No, we decided not to".
You see this all the time in Third World countries - no matter how many times it has happened before - the entrepreneurs get thrown out, the economy collapses, and then the call for new pigeons goes out.
American cities are trying the same thing; they are trying to re-colonize with whites because the “takers” need “makers” to pay their bills. They offer some generous concessions (fortified compounds, 95%+ of available police protection), but race has become so politicized and violent they get few takers.
A few years back there was a demonstration at a playground in NYC; a group of non-white parents were appealing for white children to use the playground - so the city would actually maintain it. They weren’t even subtle about it; they need white REVENUES.
Some of those white farmers accepted an invitation from neighboring Mozambique to farm there; while there is a language barrier they seem quite content. The Africans there still remember when the Portuguese ran it, and while there were serious issues the plumbing and electricity worked. Now they’ll get the best of both worlds (independence AND civilization), and the farmers do as well (stability and prosperity).
Freddie Mercury’s family fled to England when the island of Zanzibar did the same thing (expelled the Asians); now a similar problem is brewing in the Caribbean (in Trinidad). The black population feels the Indian minority has too much economic influence...
The “war veterans” nonsense was exposed as a hoax when journalists pointed out that the thugs killing farmers and beating their black workers were in their 20s - they were either babies or not born yet during the war (which ended in 1980). The farms were given as political favors, but the white owners and black workers were gone - so nature just reclaimed the land (and the country ran out of food, and then money as it had to buy it elsewhere).
Africa is just reverting to what it was before Europeans arrived; the only difference is they wear clothing now. Nothing else has changed; the president of South Africa was openly married to three women simultaneously, Arabs from the north still capture black slaves in the south, and tribes kill each other for shiny things.
I hope it is a new start for all of the people that love that place.
If there is to be a break with the past, it has to start with people that just take the first move.
I guess I am confused. Based on this Reuters article, I thought the government was going to nationalize the bank and take land away from the white farmers without compensating them. Are they taking land away from the people who stole farms from the white farmers?

I agree. If it was me, I'd torch the whole thing, just to spite everybody.
Why go to a country that’ already destroyed when there’s a Great One here to destroy?

Rhodesia was once known as the “Bread basket of Africa”.
