Back in November, shortly after Trump ignited a war with the NFL over player protests of the National Anthem, Papa John's insisted that their sales were getting crushed by a backlash from fans who decided to boycott games (we covered it here: Papa John's Pulls NFL Ads Due To "Negative Consumer Sentiment"). That said, the complaint from Papa John's was seemingly discredited as a convenient excuse for poor earnings the very next day when Pizza Hut said they had seen no impact from the NFL protests. Of course, with all of the noise of seasonality, weather and random accounting games played by CFO's, it's almost impossible to know if, or by how much, declining NFL viewership actually impacted Papa John's earnings...any conclusions would be ambiguous at best. That said, what doesn't seem to be all that ambiguous, and probably should lend some credence to the original claims from Papa John's, is the startling collapse in chicken wings prices that coincided perfectly with Trump's first NFL protest tweets back in September. According to the Bloomberg data below, wing prices started dropping almost immediately after Trump's first tweets and have fallen a staggering 30% since.
Meanwhile, the collapse in wing prices was at least partially blamed for the abysmal earnings posted by one of the largest poultry producers, Sanderson Farms, earlier this this morning. Asked for their profit outlook for 2018, SAFM management, whose stock tumbled 12% on the day, seemed to be somewhat optimistic aside from crushing traffic declines at wing restaurants which they said are being attributed to the NFL protests.

ESPN and the NFL . . . Who is still watching? They have been laughing themselves silly all the way to the bank over the years. Hopefully men and women are spending more time actually engaging in conversation, etc. with their kids and grandkids. You can learn a lot about what’s going on in a child’s life over a game of CHECKERS.
They aren’t much at sports expertise, either.
You can bet the bookies are feeling it bigtime.

They can’t just grow parts of chickens yet, so they have to find something to do with all of the parts. (The dark meat and feet go to China).
The fact that almost all NFL games take place on Sunday makes it very easy to boycott. Just find something else to do on Sunday, and soon, you won’t miss it at all. Plenty of other sports on TV. Plus, Sunday is a day off for most people anyway, so they can always find some other fun activity.
It would be much harder for a baseball or basketball fan to boycott MLB or the NBA. The beauty of those leagues, from a fan’s perspective, is the ability to watch a game on TV practically every night. That’s a lot harder to give up, especially when you just want to relax for a few hours after working all day, before going to bed and having to get up for work again the next morning.
The NFL isn’t playing with matches, it’s playing with dynamite.

A few months ago, I posted on FR my totally unscientific analysis. I noticed a glut of the preseasoned buffalo ready for grilling chicken wings at Walmart each time I went.
I thought it must be due to NFL taking the knee, and losing viewers. My Walmart would reduce them for quick sale every week. Now, they only put out about three to six packages of wings instead of about sixteen.
Its not the wing. Its the sauce. Spicy.
And you have to eat the whole chicken. Global warming, doncha know.
I like sauce & I love spicy .... would prefer to have a chicken tender to dip in my sauce rather than trying to get a little meat off a wing bone.
Between everyone in the family, the whole chicken gets eaten & the carcass goes outside to the raccoon family that lives next door. No waste! :-)
I always make stock when we have a roasted chicken, and it was the SCORE of a lifetime when Mom gave me the turkey carcass this Thanksgiving!
Beau thought I was a little nutty when I got so excited, so I’m expecting a wrapped turkey carcass under the Christmas Tree for me this year, LOL!
Fact is, Mom has NEVER before given up the carcass. At least it went to a good home. ;)
I don't know if this snack is available where you all live, but about a decade ago, Snyder Pretzel figured out they could take all of the broken scraps of pretzels, coat them in different flavorings, put them in a bag...and people would buy them and eat them and scream for more! Pretzel Factory Floor Sweepings! Again, brilliant marketing!

Not sure your age, smoking.. but when I was younger.. wings were considered crab bait (along with necks, of course). My Mom would get a huge pack of them for stock, too. Now they are more expensive than the on sale legs, thighs and sometimes... breasts.

Before spicy chicken wings became popular, you could buy them very cheap, almost like soup bones. Actually, they are pretty good for making soup.
It's the high fat content.
