Struggling Subway is now facing a franchisee revolt
NY Post ^ | 12/13/17 | Josh Kosman

.....The struggling sandwich chain has seen customer traffic plummet a whopping 25 percent over the past five years....

In a Nov. 30 memo to franchisees that revealed the stomach-churning drop, Subway’s owners promised $25 million to boost marketing this spring for the company’s 44,000 locations and to bring back a limited-time, $4.99 footlong sandwich promotion.....

....the crucial footlong deal — aimed squarely at the McDonald’s dollar menu — is in danger because of a revolt by franchise owners, who fret that doubling down on discounts will further shave their already thin profits.

More than 400 of them have signed a petition protesting the two-month footlong deal that’s slated to begin in January....

Not having drive thru windows was their first flaw. That turned me off even back when they had a decent product.

We live in podunkville so have only 3 fast food joints. Two are burgers places that have drive thru windows. Then there’s Subway. Hardly any cars are parked at the Subway where there’s a line at the places with a drive thru. That’s the reason for “fast” food. No one wants to park, get out, go in and stand around waiting for their food.

We hadn’t been in years but decided to try them for something different and because of a 2 for 1 coupon. Pitiful. Totally tasteless. Couldn’t taste the cheese or the beef or the Sweet Onion sauce. The Oat Bread also had no taste. The veggies tasted old and very chemically. Didn’t finish it. Nope. Never again.

We don’t bother with Subway anymore. A few years ago my husband bought a bunch of sandwiches there for a picnic we had at the ranch and a bunch of people including myself got violently ill.

The turkey sandwiches were the culprit.

Now I won’t eat processed turkey cold cuts anymore. Just lost my taste for them.

Wawa kicks the stuffing out of Subway.

When in Philly we did ONLY neighborhood steak and hoagie shops, but in travelling through other areas of PA, Sheetz fresh-made stuff was extraordinary and inexpensive!

The only reason to eat at a place like BK is that you have a coupon. The regular prices for that food is an absolute rip off. I can buy far superior food for the same price at many locations.

In most places, you can find a local deli that sells better food at the same or lower price. I can’t see any reason to go to a chain like this. I also think they have murdered their brand by Subways in some disgusting locations, like very dirty gas stations.

Wawa is such a gift to the mid Atlantic region. A real taste of Philly.

Subway has Two problems

1) Overexposure. I live in a typical ‘burb. Within 2 miles there are 3 Subways (actually 5 if you count the ones in the Walmart and BJ’s). Within 5 miles there’s more than a dozen.
Almost every mini-mall has a subway now.

2) Indians started to buy them. It used to be all White people but now everyone has Indians behind the counter. Sorry, but they don’t have a reputation for cleanliness.

That’s pretty typical of franchise life. Most companies in that model give you bad spots for your first few stores, mid-range volume with low profitability. They like the crucible, stick it out the tough way, earn your chops, buy more franchises, eventually they give you good locations that will have high profit margins. They save those for the loyal ones with double digits stores.

The meat portions keep getting smaller.

Exactly. They're essentially bread sandwiches. No thanks.

My town sounds like yours. Our Subway is relatively new, and they make a decent sandwich. But “fast” is not getting out, walking in, and waiting for a sub. That lack of convenience has me drive on by.

There is a Subway I drive by often, and I don’t know how it survives. There is usually no one there, except an employee or 2, even at lunch or supper time. This on a busy highway, in town, with easy access (just turn off the highway into the parking lot.)

This one does have a drive-thru.

Being on the run so much, and tiring of Whoppers*, and with not many other options (McDonalds - UGH!), I gave it (this Subway) a try a couple weeks ago, a $3.50 Turkey Breast half-sub-of-the-day. At least in this case, the taste was fine (not great, but ok), and the ingredients fresh, but the sandwich and amount of meat was smallish. I suspect a full size made-to-order sandwich over at the Kroger Deli would be a better deal, tho’ it’d also take several more minutes to get, all said and done. I do like this Subway’s posting of a little basic nutritional info. at the drive-up.

All in all, I’d rate the Subway sub “ok” if I’m in a hurry, but if I’m really hungry & on the run, it’s gonna be a “coupon” Whopper plus the apple, grapes, and mini-carrots I usually have with me in a small cooler, and some water.

*Oddly enough, if you look at BK’s nutritional info., a Whopper, less the pickles (to reduce sodium content a bit), is one of the least harmful things on the BK menu.

Jersey Mike’s has them in a headlock.

Ping for Jersey Mike's, I could eat the Giant kahuna everyday:)

Really though, their Giant subs are enough for 2-3 meals.

I’ll jump in here to comment on the Subway party line.

Only the veggies are fresh. All else including the bread comes frozen.

I discovered this fact when visiting a huge frozen food storage and distribution center for a client. I made numerous visits.

I saw all the various frozen palletized cartons of Subway frozen ingredients. The ware house workers sometimes damaged a carton that resulted in spilled ham or disgusting looking perfectly formed egg portions or long thin bred dough. Everything was there on display, not fresh. Ihe Subway ingredients come to the shop in frozen cardboard cartons.

Subway ingredients are frozen. Subway ingredients are not fresh

My testimony is the result of direct multiple observations on the warehouse floor

The meat portions keep getting smaller. Pretty soon they will just use a ‘meat’ spray to flavor the bread. I don’t go any more.

The last time I ate a Subway sandwich was many years ago, and even then you basically got a bread and shredded lettuce sandwich (very little meat or cheese).

I had a Subway card where you accumulate points for dollars spent. A free inexpensive hoagie was 75 points. I accumulated about 150 points at a local Subway. When our office moved to the next town over, I went to the local Subway there, and tried to use the "Subway" points for a free hoagie. After the hoagie was made, I went to the cashier to "pay". When I handed him the card, he swiped it and then said he would not honor the points because they were earned at a different Subway.

After some back and forth, I flipped the hoagie onto the counter and told him to keep it. Only then did he relent. I've never been back.
