Texan Don Willett Confirmed By U.S. Senate To Federal 5th Circuit Court

Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett was confirmed Wednesday afternoon to fill a long-open seat on the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, a historically powerful and conservative court that represents Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

A confirmation vote on Jim Ho, a former state solicitor general and the other Texas nominee to the 5th Circuit, is expected later this week.

Willett — voted out 50-47 by the U.S. Senate — was just the latest in a slew of judicial nominations recently passed through the upper chamber. The Republican-dominated Congress has been evaluating and confirming nominees at a comparatively bracing pace after years of partisan delay tactics under the Barack Obama administration.

Don Willett posted a joke about how he likes bacon -- A LOT. Sure, it's an old and tired internet meme. But everyone has probably done it -- or something similar -- themselves.

Funnyman Al Franken brought it up in Willett's confirmation hearing. Franken said he didn't get the joke about liking bacon.

TWO TAKEAWAYS

1. Sadly, we'll probably see no more bacon jokes from Willett.

2. Gladly, we won't have to suffer the humorless Franken in the Senate for much longer.

18 judges in almost 11 months. At this rate, Trump will need several terms to fill all the vacancies. McConnell does not want conservative judges. If he did, the Senate would change the ridiculous 30 day rule. If/when the Dems take over the Senate, they will scrap that rule the first day of the new session.

They just pulled 2 nominees. I wish they didn’t. I think this is the most important thing for President Trump to do these next 3 years. Keep appointing judges and getting them confirmed. If Trump overhauls the judiciary, he will be a success for decades. Doesn’t matter how many bills he signs. The judiciary can be in place well past most of us are dead.
