Auto burglars are having a field day in the Palo Alto area.
They come from as far away as Oakland, Richmond, Emeryville and San Francisco, several law enforcement officials say.
Their preferred M.O is smashing a car window and grabbing whatever valuables they find inside.
Its a huge problem with no end in sight, said Wayne Benitez, a patrol sergeant with the Palo Alto Police Department.
Benitez, who has been on the front lines of law enforcement for nearly 30 years, said that under new laws, particularly Propositions 47 and 57, criminals are not going to jail for property crimes, and they know it.

One of my first jobs out of college was in East Menlo Park, directly abutting East Palo alto, or so it seemed.
My truck almost burned up one day because it was too close to the dumpster, which ghetto people had lit on fire for kicks.
I learned so much during my tenure at Intertek Testing Services.
Gated communities dont mean much here anymore. Daughter lives in one. About once a month someone uses a truck to push on the gates til they break. Bam! Theyre in. Then they drive through the neighborhood with garage door clickers and steal from whichever ones open. If the back door to the garage is unlocked theyll go in the house too. She disables her garage door at night.
But why Palo Alto? Prop 47 is state-wide. What is special about Palo Alto?
Nothing. We live in Bakersfield. My point was the theft is out of control statewide. And even their gated communities wont protect them anymore.
Wow. Unbelievable.
