Snowmen in Alabama? Sledding in Mississippi? From Texas to Georgia, snow blankets the South

ATLANTA. Snow blanketed a vast swath of the Deep South on Friday, triggering a flurry of winter weather warnings that closed businesses and schools, canceled hundreds of flights and caused traffic gridlock. It also unleashed a flurry of snowman construction and sledding in places more accustomed to sunshine than snow.

The storm dropped a rare coating of snow as far south as Brownsville, Texas - near the border of Mexico - up through southern Louisiana and parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and the southern Appalachians.

"This is an unusual event - to see snow falling this early in the season all the way from Texas and the Gulf Coast region to Georgia," said Laura Pagano, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Atlanta/Peachtree City office. "It has happened before, but not often."

More than 200,000 customers across the region lost power as snow downed branches and power lines.

Oh, I meant to say, also...

I was watching that snow/rain line all day and evening yesterday. For almost all that time, my place was in the rain, not snow. The line was diagonal so Montgomery and then East Electic, Alex City, Lake Martin was getting snow but me only rain.

I thought it was over when I went to bed about 10:00. Was very surprised to see all this white this morning. I like it bu the dog wasn’t too happy.

We were taught in school that Central Alabama was Birmingham, North was Huntsville and Decatur, and South was Montgomery to Mobile (Mobile sometimes called Gulf Coast Alabama).

I know looking at a map puts us more Central than South, but that’s what was taught.

Maybe we’re “South Central”. You know, the Hood!

Health care worker that takes care of my ward in my home lives by Lake Jordan and got 5 inches!

Ex boss is not hunter type...more golfer.

Watch out for big cats if you go out. Game wardens say they don’t exist here, but I know many who have seen them near where you live.

>> It is called winter. <<

Not what I “call” it. I was taught that Winter begins on Dec. 21st.

>> Nothing in North Mississippi south of Memphis <<

Yeah, but Jackson MS got 4.9 inches — the most since 1982.

And “official” Winter hasn’t even yet begun!

Its global warming...because if you boil water long enough, it freezes.

Hey, watch where your stepping.

Rural, north central Florida on our cattle farm is a great place to live.

Except for the insects, critters and high humidity. :-)

I'm from Arizona and tolerate the dry heat much better than this climate. We had Canadian "snowbirds" show up there every winter too.

We didn't have snow here but we had windy conditions with cold rain all evening and half the night. Chilly today with a freeze expected tonight and Sunday night then warm back up some.

I wouldn't live in any of the Florida cities myself. Miami? Ha! Never been there and never will. Orlando-Tampa? Took the kids to Disney World there 30 years ago but never again. I like the beaches but I haven't been since we retired here 7 years ago. Too busy on the farm.

I like the country away from the big cities and towns. Where much of what we discuss on FR, especially the politics, doesn't affect us. It's like living in another world.

I lived for two years in Mississippi not far from Vicksburg back in the early - mid eighties. The first winter, the temperature dropped so low for so long that it froze the top of a 100-yard diameter pond behind my house, creating an ice layer 6-8 inches thick, which then served as an impromptu ice rink for every kid within 5 miles. At one time, we had easily 20 kids out on the ice playing hockey with branches and a piece of wood as the puck.

The next winter we got a couple of feet of snow. As it turned out, a lot of Mississippians did not know how to drive on snow, especially with their back-wheel drive muscle cars. Good times.

And in the meantime, I’m dreaming of a green Christmas here in Alaska.

In my area, this is the first snow since January 2014.

Before that, late December 2010.

I guess it depends on how far South you go.

BTW, it’s too cold to sit in my stand. I’m staying indoors until it warms up some more!

I could hunt from my upstairs dormer with 500 yard bench rest shots

But my wife’s girlf buddy and her deer corn spreader in that back corner of the pasture would have a fit

It was mid teens here last night

That’s shoothouse withna little propane heater deer hunting for old guys like me

I hunted aliceville Alabama a few years ago and it was 15 and northwest howl

Too cold to be honest

But big bucks were moving in bright sunshine at 830-10 in shooting lanes

They were just moving too quick

Last real snow season in Nashville was 2010 and we had 22-30 inches total depending where you were

Since then no major just 2-4 inches here and there

Like Jimmy Kimmels bachelor party

Where I live off 65 at the goose creek peytonsville exit is developing too fast

It’ll be like Frisco Texas in 20 years

I’m prolly moving further out....wife is resisting but well see
