Schumer walks tightrope on shutdown, immigration fights

TITLE SHOULD BE: DEMS READY TO SHUT DOWN US GOVT UNLESS DREAMERS ARE LEGALIZED.

The threat of a government shutdown has put Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) in a tricky political situation.

Schumer has kept his caucus unified against President Trump’s major legislative drives on ObamaCare and tax reform, but he faces a more divided group of Democrats when it comes to protecting young immigrants who could face deportation next year.

The internal debate has more to do with legislative strategy than the underlining issue.

Democrats generally back a legislative fix that would allow so-called Dreamers brought to the United States illegally as children to remain in the country.

But Democrats facing reelection next year in states that voted for Trump don’t want to risk a shutdown over the issue.

I mistakenly thought US CITIZENS elect Senators and House Reps to represent LEGAL US CITIZENS? Boy was I ever mistaken.

I’m picturing him, tippy-toe, in a tutu, on a tightrope.

Dems don’t like shutting the government down. They know that Trump’s base is fine with it.

I want to see Schumer “walk the plank”. If he walks a tightrope, let it be 200 feet above the ground with no net below.

IIRC, after the last “slowdown”, the Dems were complaining it cost the Government $40 Billion.

Uh, no morons. It saved the taxpayers $40 Billion. And nobody even knew that 17% of the government was closed. Only those who spent years and money planning a visit to national parks and monuments were affected.

Shut ‘er down.

The government shut-down during the Clinton years was viewed as a win by the Dems.

That’s why they went for the shut-down during Obama’s term. And, that (banned swear-word adjectives) Obama vengefully used the shutdown as an excuse to inflict maximum pain on the deplorables. Remember when he set up guards to keep 90-year-old veterans from visiting the War Memorials? Or when he had Rangers shooing away people outside some National Parks for taking scenic pictures, because that was deemed Park Recreation?

I don’t think a shut-down this time will be a Dem win. Trump should push hard for DACA with border control (and wall) AND some chain migration control. Otherwise, what’s the point?

That’s the first thing Trump needs to Tweet about if they shut it down - “Who are all these non-essential personnel? You’re fired!”

If it’s such a win, then why don’t they do it every time they had the majority?

How come it wasn’t a “win” during the Reagan years?

Obama engaged in illegal activity during his “partial shutdown” too.

McConnell keeps unified with his Uniparty fellow travelers. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

I believe the accepted wisdom is that it’s a win for the Dems, but it can’t be used too often—it has to be used occasionally to make a point. Dem opposition to Trump is all about making points and ultimately getting rid of him.

I also think that the Dem policy under Obama of never having a budget and governing by continuing resolution (using the inflation of baseline budget) is a sub-category under this type of misbehavior that was used, over and over.

I don’t agree with the accepted wisdom, I think it depends on who the voters think is problematic and abusing the process. I think the balance would tip towards Trump this time.

Schumer is signaling the MSM to get ready to post news and articles making it look like it’s Trump’s fault for the shutdown

Well Donald. Tell them to make your day. After they cause the shutdown, turn over the management of the trust that is the National Parks, BLM, and USFS to the local areas, permanently.
See how they like that.
