Franken resignation could upend Minnesota races

Sen. Al Franken’s (D-Minn.) possible resignation on Thursday could set off a scramble among potential candidates to fill his seat while putting both Senate seats in the state up for reelection in 2018.

Franken’s Democratic colleagues rapidly pulled support from him on Wednesday, as more than half of the Senate Democratic Conference — led by a stream of successive statements seemingly coordinated by half a dozen female senators — called on Franken to resign in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Thomas Perez joined that chorus, upping speculation that Franken will step aside on Thursday, when he’s slated to make an announcement.

I could see Pawlenty or Bachmann being the GOP nominee in MN.

I believe Ellison will be the successor.

I think democrats feel Franken’s senate seat is a save one for them. They’re just hoping to get the Alabama seat that Roy Moore is campaigning for.

They’re looking to pick up the senate seat from Alabama while feeling safe in Minnesota. If republicans stood a change in Minnesota, democrats would NEVER be asking Franken to leave.

Local media isn’t even mentioning Ellison.

Either the AG or the LT. Governor.

Outside Minneapolis and St. Paul, I don’t believe Ellson
is all that well known or well like. Sure he can be elected from CD forever, but his CD is not Minnesota writ large.

That would be interesting. Even in a blue state like Minnesota a black radical like Keith Ellison would have a hard time winning a statewide race. Maxine Waters comes from a universally safe seat in LA and an overwhelmingly blue state like California, but she wouldn’t even come close to winning a US Senate or gubernatorial race there. A lot of white Democrats, in the secrecy of the voting booth, will still not pull the lever in the voting booth or punch the hole in a card for a radical, extreme left-wing black candidate in a statewide race. It’s ok when Keith Ellison and Maxine Waters represent a majority black congressional district, but a state or national office is something else all together. White liberal tolerance for black radicals has its limits!

I can see that jackass Ellison running the Somali Muslim crowd in Minnesota would vote for him in a heartbeat

They would only be the fill-in until 2018.

Not the candidate.

Then, again...

Dayton is barely lucid, these days.

He may appoint Batman to fill Franken’s seat.

Doubt it, they know he’s not popular. My bet is the most progressive female the DFL has to offer.

They will have all the advantages of incumbency, and likely will win.

I’ve been to Bemidji. Coolest thing is to be able to walk across the Mississippi River without any threat of drowning.
