The Pentagon Is Reportedly Scouting The West Coast For Sites For Missile-Defense Systems

SIMI VALLEY, Calif (Reuters) - The U.S. agency tasked with protecting the country from missile attacks is scouting the West Coast for places to deploy new anti-missile defenses, two Congressmen said on Saturday, as North Korea's missile tests raise concerns about how the United States would defend itself from an attack.

West Coast defenses would likely include Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missiles, similar to those deployed in South Korea to protect against a potential North Korean attack.

The accelerated pace of North Korea's ballistic missile testing program in 2017 and the likelihood the North Korean military could hit the U.S. mainland with a nuclear payload in the next few years has raised the pressure on the United States government to build-up missile defenses.

On Wednesday, North Korea tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can fly over 13,000 km (8,080 miles), placing Washington within target range, South Korea said on Friday.

Congressman Mike Rogers, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee and chairs the Strategic Forces Subcommittee which oversees missile defense, said the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), was aiming to install extra defenses at West Coast sites. The funding for the system does not appear in the 2018 defense budget plan indicating potential deployment is further off.

The Castro residents might mistake it (THAAD missile site) for a dildo.

“We had a Nike base in Marin County, CA (San Francisco suburb) in 1954.

It’s funny you should mention Nike sites, because I worked for a company in San Ramon in the late 1960’s by the name of MBAssociates. Our buildings were built over the abandoned Nike Missile silos up in Bollinger Canyon.

There are old Minuteman III silos buried under most of Northern California. I’m sure they could reclaim those in Placer and Yuba.

There were lots of schools built in the 60’s with purposed fallout shelters. I’m my elementry, the entry was under the PE teacher’s desk, which was in a closet.

They were once with the Nike bases (Nike Zeus).

Seems like existing bases like the naval stations in San Diego, the Marines at Camp Pendleton, the USAF at Vandenberg AFB etc up the coast to Seattle are already likely sites since THAAD is a portable system.

Its rocket science that isn't rocket science.

Pendleton is near Oceanside CA. We lived in CA in the 80’s in Escondido and drove past it many times.

I think you mean the Presidio of San Francisco. The Presidio of Monterey is still an active installation.

There were never Minuteman III sites in "most of northern kalifornia". The only Minuteman capable sites are the test sites at Vandenberg AFB at Lompoc.

You are thinking of the old Titan I sites.

“However, it is important to understand that THAAD is an anti-theater ballistic missile system not designed to counter intercontinental ballistic missiles. It is aimed at missiles under a range of 5,500 km and beyond 150 km. It boasts an area protection of 200 km and is capable of multiple launches.”

If so the building of a THAAD system in California may be to protect the US against submarines or container ships missile attacks.

Probably. I just recalled reading about missile silos in Placer and Yuba long, long ago. I’m being a bit hyperbolic here anyway.

My favorite feature was the nuclear warhead. No hit-to-kill required. Just get in the general area and vaporize the incoming warhead with a nuke, along with decoys and anything else in the RV.

I think you mean Presidio of San Fransisco..

There are plenty of old defense sites on the west coast that could be used for missile defense sites, like Fort Cronkhite, etc. Or put them on the old NIKE sites.

Sometimes, they are one and the same.

"Our buildings were built over the abandoned Nike Missile silos up in Bollinger Canyon."

NIKE was not launched from a silo.
