Playoff Chair Says 'Alabama Was Clearly The No. 4 Team' And It Wasn't That Close (College football)
Business Insider ^ | 12-3-2017 | Cork Gaines

The College Football Playoff committee has spoken and Alabama is in over Ohio State as the fourth team and will play Clemson in the Sugar Bowl semifinal.

Bama-vs.-Ohio State was debated heavily following the conference championship games on Saturday. Ohio State had a conference championship and more impressive wins. But they also had something Alabama did not have, a second loss, an ugly 33-point debacle against Iowa.

The decision was also controversial because it means this year's playoff will have no teams from the Big Ten and the Pac-12. Instead, it will have two teams from the SEC, including one team that did not reach their conference championship game.

Listening to playoff committee chairman Kirby Hocutt, it sounds like the Buckeyes' loss to Iowa may have sealed their fate even before the conference championship games.

"We compared [Alabama's resume] to a 2-loss Ohio State team, obviously that one loss at home to No. 2-ranked Oklahoma," Hocutt said on ESPN. "But more damaging was the 31-point loss to unranked Iowa."

Conference championships are supposed to be a bit of a tiebreaker if the teams are considered otherwise equal. In this case, the committee did not view the teams as equals.

I think if he wanted to leave last year they may have blocked him. At this point, they’ll probably let him go to the U.

You're talking about one game per year. That won't quite finance all major college football programs and Bama games throughout the season are always among the top rated.

What was the rating of the Iron Bowl outside of Alabama or the southeast?

Lol, since the population and Alabama is about 4.8 million and the game was viewed by 13.7 million, there must be someone watching somewhere else in the USA. And you are conveniently ignoring the fact that it was the highest rated game nationally during RIVALRY WEEK.

Look at the rivalries it outdrew and by what large margins. Try to be better informed before commenting.

I was on one of my cross-country drives in, I think, 1972, and my cousin and I were in Knoxville looking for a place to stay.

We drove down a side street, and saw a football team practicing. Me being from NYC, these were the biggest and fastest football players I had ever seen.

“Must be the Vols”, I said to my cousin.

Turned out to be a local Junior High School. True story.

They very well may be. Yes, they competed well after a very very shaky start. KU will continue to be the whipping boy in the conference for the foreseeable future.

Kind of surprised Matt Campbell won that award since Lincoln Riley has OU in the playoffs in his first year. Probably just on exceeding expectations and being competitive in every game.

Iirc UGA did everything they could to give Notre Dame the win, but they refused to take it. I never imagined the Dawgs would end up in the top 4 after that game.

Bama plays Tennessee and Candy cross-conference games.

As a Buckeye I don’t care. 3 teams deserved it but 4 play. Had to take someone not really deserving... Joel Platt is shredding the committee.

Oh Big10 too white I love that. That statement above about more blacks, there is something to be proud of. SEC never uses white players haha. I guess every DE in the SEC is better than Boss. Hahaha. Look how poorly his big brother is doing in the league. Damn white guys. OSU had 3 black DBs taken in the first round last year. Slow.

Then there was Zeke Elliot’s 85 yards through the heart of the South. Those fast Bama guys chasing a northerner. Wasn’t that the same year a 59-0 Wisconsin shook off OSU embarrassment to run over Auburn. Gordon went for 275 yards rushing.

Why are you so angry? I didn’t know, so I asked a question. I’m sorry I don’t worship at the altar of Alabama football, so I don’t know all the numbers. As a sports fan I fear that college football is entering a critical period with the decline of the NFL because of left-wing activism and because of declining participation among younger players. I actually want the numbers to go up, but I fear certain parts of the country will lose interest in college football and that will not be good for Alabama.

Actually I don’t follow any team, so I’m only interested as a sports fan. College football needs specific post-season criteria.

I think the opinion on Lincoln Riley was that he basically inherited the team from Bob Stoops.

Switzer faced the same thing when he took over from Fairbanks.

Seems inevitable that more parents will steer kids away from football to other sports to avoid brain injury. And more and more schools, fearing lawsuits, will drop football.

The UGA team that played yesterday would beat ND by 30.

I’m wondering...on Dec. 13, if the news is that Roy Moore won (which looks likely), will they sanctimoniously decide “upon further review” that it should go to The Ohio State University instead?

Yep, and because of that college football is going to have to develop specific criteria for post-season play. No more nebulous “strength-of schedule”. no more eye-tests. Specific requirements just like every other sport. If not they are running the risk of speeding up the demise.

I’m not angry. You tried to attach a ridiculous amount of significance to the ratings for one championship game. Part of the reason for those ratings was likely that it was the first four team playoff and was preceded by far more publicity and buildup than previous BCS championship games.

Bama is a huge TV draw and always has been when they had top rated teams, which has been most years since 1958.

The only thing that might hurt college football in the South is the justifiable concern more and more parents have concerning long term brain damage that is a risk of playing football. Maybe equipment improvements and some rule changes will lessen that risk.

My jaw dropped when Alabama played Texas A&M....their quarterback is 6'7" and 270 pounds. Man O Man.

Tell that to the OSU team that not only spanked Bama with their 3rd string QB then did so as well against Oregon.

Why didn’t they have 4 teams from the SEC. This is a fake Championship to make ESPN happy.

Take the 5 major champions and add 3 other champions and have a real Championship.
