By Norimitsu Onishi and Jeffrey Moyo Nov. 21, 2017 HARARE, Zimbabwe — Robert Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980, resigned as president on Tuesday shortly after lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against him, according to the speaker of Parliament.

The speaker of Parliament read out a letter in which Mr. Mugabe said he was stepping down “with immediate effect” for “the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and the need for a peaceful transfer of power.”

Parliament erupted into cheers and jubilant residents poured into the streets of Harare, the capital. It seemed to be an abrupt capitulation by Mr. Mugabe, who had refused to step down only two days earlier, when his former political party, ZANU-PF, formally expelled him.

People automatically assume that the fall of an autocrat means that something better will take its place. They do so in spite of all historical (and recent) evidence to the contrary. You need only look at the post-"Arab Spring" Middle East to see what happens when one autocrat is gone: he's replaced with a worse one, or else the nation descends into even worse chaos.

I suspect that Mangangwa will persecute Zimbabwe's whites even more than Mugabe did, because he needs to prove his bona fides to the masses, and his basketcase of a country needs a scapegoat.

It is a stupid comparison, because it is after the fact.

No one can know an individual future; decisions must be made before events, not afterward.

Sorry, should not have used the word “stupid”.

What I meant was “invalid”.

Any you may not even have been talking about decisions, but results.

In my Obama voice - "Lets be clear - its obvious that all the problems there were caused by a lack of diversity."

Don't know what the future holds but Robert was a butcher and today this nation has a more hopeful future, I pray they take advantage of the opportunity.

It was Enoch Powell who said that every political career not interrupted by premature death ends in failure.

And here I thought that was something you just made up. Nope, it was discussed during a recent interview of Hillary. Bizarre and pathetic...almost as bad as the time Glenn Beck swore Ted Cruz in as president.

I never assumed it would be an improvement - but there are a LOT less whites to persecute at this point. They took their property years ago; enough blacks worked on those farms to know the black government is the problem.
