The commander of the U.S. nuclear force ignited controversy when he said Saturday that he would not follow an illegal order from the president. U.S. Strategic Command commander Air Force Gen. John Hyten was asked during the Halifax International Security Forum in Nova Scotia what he would do if he was asked to do something that was illegal.
Hyten responded that military officers study the law of armed conflict, which has certain principles they must abide by.
“If you execute an unlawful order, you can go to jail, and you could go to jail for the rest of your life,” he said. “It’s not that difficult.”
He said if he were given an illegal order from the president in regards to a nuclear strike, he would suggest something within the legal boundaries.
“The way the process work is it’s simple. I provide advice to the president. He’ll tell me what to do, and if it’s illegal, guess what’s going to happen? I’m going to say, Mr. President, that’s illegal. Guess what he’s going to do? He’s going to say, ‘What would be legal?’ And we’ll come up with options of a mix of capabilities to respond whatever the situation is, and that’s the way it works. It’s not that complicated,” he said.
Many interpreted Hyten’s remarks as suggesting he would resist a nuclear order from President Trump, and that his comments showed a lack of trust in the president.
A U.S. Strategic Command spokeswoman called that view “a gross misrepresentation of what he said” and “very misleading.”
“If you watch the panel comments, it speaks for itself. But most people don’t take the time … to go actually see what the source said,” Stratcom spokeswoman Julie Zeigenhorn told Breitbart News.

I sure want to see somebody come up with an example of an illegal nuclear attack. And this General needs to be asked by POTUS, today, for an example of an illegal attack.
I can think of dozens of scenarios where even a preemptive attack is legal, if not hundreds.
And remember the old Nixon adage from 1973: “If the President does it, it’s not illegal”.
By definition.
The bottom line is if this General would have been sitting on base doing what he’s supposed to do, none of this would have happened. His job is not to entertain think tanks
This has nothing to do with hypothetical ‘illegal orders’. Every last one of these corrupt and politicized pieces of living sh!t in D.C. believe that the Trump admin is ILLEGAL in and of itself. Thus the rhetoric about following ‘illegal orders’,etc. They do not recognize his legitimacy as POTUS. They are in #sabotage & #resist mode. Let that sink in.
If you haven’t figure that out after the massive leaks, the special counsel coup, the spying, the tweets by holder and his ilk to ‘hold the line’, etc...then there’s no hope for you.
He said he would state his case to the POTUS and if POTUS was unswayed and the lawyers say it is a legal order he would execute the launch.
So he thinks he is one on one with the CIC. Nonsense, he would be lucky to talk one on one with Mattis if he were not arrested before that. He needs to go.
The devil was in the detail he said he would consult with attorneys and if they said it was legal he would do it. I think it’s going to be hard to find an Air Force lawyer who says use of a nuclear weapon is illegal?
With this, the U.S. Strategic Command just failed their NSI (Nuclear Surety Inspection). I assure you, General Hyten has already been relieved of Command.

The press baited the General, and he fell for it, unfortunately. If one starts with the premise that the press is out to destroy Trump, one won’t be tricked by their questions. They really are a despicable lot.

This is getting blown way out. The general, indeed all soldiers, are duty bound NOT to follow an illegal order. This is not news.
The general doesn’t get off the hook that easy. He had zero business doing Q&A and giving interviews.

The general of strategic command has no business explaining to the world exactly how he intends to operate ....the jackass is another in the long line of treasonous and low-quality Generals we have produced.
The oath is to obey “lawful” orders. Further, every troop is trained to NOT OBEY ILLEGAL ORDERS. This is normal and applies from the lowest private to the highest general.
Nothing new here but the MSM wants to spin this as some kind of insubordination. Stating that you will obey lawful orders or stating that you will not obey unlawful orders is what is expected of all service members.

There is no other answer he could give. None. And I got out as a Captain, much less a general.
Refusing orders from the CIC in a nuclear strike situation is a great way to get shot in the head where you stand.
