The Catalan Parliament has voted to declare independence from Spain, prompting the central government to impose direct rule just 40 minutes later. The motion was carried by 70 votes to 10, with two abstentions. But before the vote, opposition parties stormed out of parliament in protest - with pro-independence MPs draping their empty seats with Catalan flags. In response, the Spanish government in Madrid has invoked article 155 of the country's constitution, dismantling Catalonia's autonomy.

“Hasn’t Catalonia had off and on separatist movement from Spain since there was a Spain?”

It’s kind of like Scotland.

So yes, no, sort of, sometimes, and depending on the century.

There is a back story here that is not being discussed.

The Basques have been at war on and off with Spain for years. If Catalonia gets independence, the Basques will revolt and they are a very capable people.

Spain has a deep hatred for the Brits continued hold on Gibraltar. Spain is in a critical geopolitical location and has historically been afraid of breaking up.

They are still smarting from the Muslim conquest and the Franco revolution.

Well Spain doesn’t need to look that far back.

In the 30s they just besieged the place until the people there gave in.

Very ironic that the descendants of muslim animals are now smart enough to want to break free of Spain to fight the muslim animals.

Brussels actually wins no matter what. If Catalonia successfully breaks free of Madrid, they will look to the EU for “protection”. Other regions looking for more autonomy / freedom will also turn to Brussels for affirmation. Madrid loses no matter what.

Isn’t Spain just a devolved version of Mexico?

Original title at time of posting appears to have been "BREAKING NEWS: Madrid imposes direct rule on Catalonia just 40 minutes [tr]", currently "Spanish Prime Minister dissolves Catalan parliament and calls a snap election as Madrid imposes direct rule on the region after it finally declared independence - amid growing fears for violence". Thanks C19fan.

“Didn’t the shooting for WWII start in Spain?”

I believe WII started when Germany invaded Poland. That's when the Allies and Axis countries started formally declaring war against each other. The Spanish civil war was certainly a prelude though along with several other preludes. Examples - Germany annexing the Sudenten Land (sp) from Czechoslovakia and Italy in North Africa and Ethiopia. These preludes did not result in everyone declaring war against someone.
