A substitute teacher was removed from a fifth grade classroom Thursday at Maxdale Elementary School in Killeen after placing duct tape over the mouths of 10 students, school district spokesman Terry Abbott said in a press release.
Three other students put duct tape over their own mouths in response to the teachers action, Abbott said.
As soon as school leaders learned of this incident, all 13 students were taken to the school nurse for observation and any treatment necessary. All 13 students are well and continued with their classes afterwards, Abbott said.
The substitute teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and barred from the campus as a result of this outrageous and unconscionable behavior.
Child Protective Services was notified and the district will support any additional investigation by law enforcement authorities, Abbott said.
Parents of students at the school were informed.
The leadership of Maxdale Elementary School and Killeen ISD are deeply saddened by this event, Abbott said.
Circa 1954 first grade. Mrs. Pruitt was our teacher. She was a most kindly and elderly lady but knew how to handle kids that were out of line.
One kid was most disruptive and would not sit in class but wandered about the class room causing disruption. Mrs. Pruitt tied him into his chair with rope for about an hour. Odd that she had the rope handy in her desk. I think she had done this before.
The rest of the class found this hilarious and laughed and teased him about it. Tying him his chair did not cure the problem. The ridicule and laughter of the other students cured the problem. Mrs. Pruitt knew exactly what she was doing.
She cured a problem in one hour. Today she would be prosecuted.
I liked Mrs. Pruitt. She was actually a very kind and sweet old lady and a very excellent teacher. First grade is very important for a young child. Mrs. Pruitt made it good.
Lots of hate out there for kids as the Biblical principle of "He who spares the rod, hates his son"....
My elementary music teacher was a mild mannered man. There was a kid in my class who would not stop talking. Ever. Drove every teacher nuts and one day the music teacher had had it. He slammed the lid on the piano, grabbed the kid by the arm, but him in a chair in the office facing away from us and wrapped duct tape around his head and over his mouth, twice.
I was happy a teacher finally shut him up then felt guilty when I saw a tear roll down his cheek. But man, he and his older brother never knew when to stop.
(Teacher here) - She obviously didn’t know the ‘bubble-wrap first, THEN duct tape’ rule.
