Watch as Berkeley firefighters arrived in Santa Rosa, stunned by scope of Tubbs Fire

NOTICE: If you hate California and have nothing good to say, move on. You are NOT wanted on this thread. Get lost.

If you have a heart, please watch the video of the Berkeley Engine 6 firefighting team helping out in Santa Rosa. This is heart-wrenching. There are links to contribute to those who have lost everything.

A group of Berkeley firefighters was called out to help fight the Tubbs Fire early Monday morning. They thought it was a "large grass fire," but arrived in Santa Rosa to find hundreds of homes and businesses burned. This video was taken and produced by a Berkeley firefighter.

Berkeley Fire Department received the call for help early Monday morning. They sent an engine north to Santa Rosa to help with what they thought was a "large grass fire." When the strike team, made up of both Berkeley and San Francisco firefighters, arrived in Santa Rosa before sunrise, they were stunned to see the scope of the already massive Tubbs Fire.

A video shot and edited by a Berkeley firefighter (above) shows the crew's reaction when they realized just how large the destructive fire had grown overnight. As the engine headed toward the Santa Rosa Kmart store where they were told to assemble, the firefighters could see flames in the hills. "Wow, those are coming out of the structures," one firefighter says. "Oh my god." A few seconds later, someone says, "It's starting to smell like houses burning."

The Tubbs Fire destroyed more than 2,800 homes, 400,000 square feet of commercial space, and took the lives of at least 19 people.

The fire was 60 percent contained Sunday morning.

That discussion is fine. It’s the “’All Californians deserve to die you leftist scum - I hope your state falls in the ocean.’ crowd that isn’t welcome.”

But it would be appreciated if topics are covered on a different thread. This one should be about the scale of catastrophe and human suffering.

You aren’t being bashed.

You are aggrieved that people who have lived in the state where you live are calling upon you to be responsible.

You have become the booze binging, failing college student whose parents won’t send them anymore money.

Your response is that your parents hate you.

I’ve been to Napa Valley a couple of times, mostly up and down that road where many well known wineries are located. I saw an interview with a lady from a winery family who said the vineyards themselves had not been damaged much, and had actually served as firebreaks and saved many areas from the fires

And this time of year lawns should still be green and mowed, and landscaping done around homes. What is there about the setting of so many homes that allowed the fires to just sweep right in and set the homes afire? Are many surrounded by dry woods?

If you notice, the large neighborhoods look like just about any suburban neighborhood and if you light a couple houses on fire in the same with 50-60 mph winds you’re going to get the same result.

While I wouldn’t have a country home in many areas out here without a several thousand gallon water tank, trash pump and couple hundred feet of fire hose, I would not have considered that a necessary asset in those Santa Rosa neighborhoods until now.

Also note, non friable asbestos or ceramic tile roofs do not suffer this as frequently...

You blew it. Only the worst among us would have dared to make a nasty crack on a thread like this, but you went and dared them to anyway.

For your information, I’m a native Californian who spent years fighting the Cali haters here and elsewhere.

You blew it.

This article may help to answer your questions. I wouldn’t have believed a fire like this were even possible. It’s a long but an excellent piece with anecdotal examples of various people’s experience that night.

This is incomprehensible- at one point the fire was estimated to be moving at over 200 feet per second.

Puzzeling to me is how no one even bothersed to pick up the phone and let these guys know what they were heading towards.

$50,000 of communications equipment on the truck and THIS is how it’s (not) used?

“Too bad California can’t manage it’s resources.”

Dumb and unwanted comment.
Guessing you have never been to California. Do you blame everyone who lives in the area when a natural disaster hits?

You usually think of burned homes on he edge of the forest, but this was a whole extended neighborhood burned down. It looked like 100s of homes gone.

Terrible!

Horrifying. These men are heroes. And remember it was the Berkeley FD that were ordered to remove the American flags from the backs of their trucks a few years after 9/11, told it might “offend” someone. The only thing offensive is that California’s government is more concerned about illegals than infrastructure.

“I think the burning embers must have literally flooded the sky and dropped down across a wide area all at once, setting simultaneous fires. “

That’s what it looks like to me as well. A storm of flying embers is the great fear in fire country.

We have had two fires near me in SoCal this season, but we have been very lucky, only about dozen houses were lost. Knock on wood.

We seem to be having a Santa Ana condition today, in the high 90s with 0% humidity. No wind though.

This was a simplified title. The calls to command can not be heard.I ‘m sure they were told to save what they could at a certain point.

I guess no discussion of that or the fact that Kali wants to leave the USA. I mean, why do we give a sh*t about a State that hates us?

You’re as bad as the apple fanbois. Everyone knows the about the leave it alone policy and the fire hazards. I’ve seen the the undergrowth on the mountainsides in LA. It’s a tinderbox.

Apparently blaming those of us who stay and fight the latino communists controlling the state isn’t bashing. Who knew.

I guess no discussion of that or the fact that Kali wants to leave the USA.

In the ultra wacko Liberal nine Bay Area Counties, Los Angeles, Sacramento and wine country counties, the Liberal voting electorate ARE totally responsible for the disastrous state their infrastructure, public and private lands and emergency preparedness is in.

No one else.

Sadly, the California uber Leftists run roughshod over the conservative, responsible counties and citizens, putting them in grave danger.

PS, ... I live in California.

Have you implemented the basic fire control steps repeatedly outlined?

No.

You too are that drunken college student whose parent has cut off the gravy train.

You have been told to produce a transcript with a semester worth of passing grades.

Your response is that your parents are so unfair. They OWE you unconditional money. Parents just don’t understand.
