GOP senator slams Trump for threats against press

A GOP senator slammed President Trump on Wednesday night for his repeated threats to revoke the licenses of television networks over negative coverage.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse questioned whether Trump was upholding his presidential oath to protect the constitution by making the threats on the media. “Mr. President: Words spoken by the President of the United States matter,” Sasse said in a statement.

“Are you tonight recanting of the oath you took on January 20th to preserve , protect, and defend the First Amendment?”

The statement caused reaction from former presidential candidate Jeb Bush who retweeted the remarks in a show of support.

Trump had tweeted earlier on Wednesday night “Network news has become so partisan, distorted and fake that licenses must be challenged and, if appropriate, revoked.”

This isn't the first time Sasse has criticized DJT over his tweets. He also blasted him over tweets about John Lewis. Apparently he believes the First Amendment applies to the press but not the President.

Add sassy Sasse to the list of RINOs to be targeted at their next reelection attempts.

I thought broadcasting/telecasting licenses were issued to entities who were obliged to do so in the public interest.

I'm not big on censorship, but interminable mendacity to benefit a political party is not in the public interest.

every time I see a GOP senator on CNN or MSNBC I skip to the next channel fast because I know they’re sell outs and are only doing interviews to attack POTUS on the leftwing shows.

Sasse comes up in 2020. I’m guessing that he’s already noticed discussions by people to primary him. Sasse is a Yale guy. Probably has a plan B of getting into CNN or NBC after he wraps up 2020.

I have no idea what the conditions are to yank a license. All I know is, if you have to have a license, you essentially need the governments permission to broadcast. So what the hell is Sassafrass talkin’ about. These mutts don’t even understand the Constitution for F’s sake.

"Think of them (the Press) as Democrat operatives with by-lines and it all makes sense" (Glenn Reynolds)

We do not have a "Free Press" in the so-called "Mainstream Media". We have a corpocracy that relentlessly shills for the Democrats. They deserve every criticism levelled against them and more.

Sasse should be removed in the next available primary election.

He’s right. President Trump shouldn’t threaten the press, he should be arresting editors and writers and owners who refuse to stop the media conspiracy of discrediting the United States and publishing national security secrets and the general overall seditious behavior.

There is benign sedition, then their is malevolent sedition and there is no fine line between the two.

What NBC reported is the kind of stuff that could lead to war. What if they were to report that Trump plans on nuking North Korea? And they know it’s a lie? Shouldn’t they be held accountable?

Networks aren’t licensed. Their individual affiliates hold the licenses.

Ahhhh this I did not know. But still, in order for all the affiliates to form a network, doesn't that still mean the network needs government permission to operate? Like if the government removed all of a networks affiliate's licenses wouldn't the network cease to exist? Doesn't the word "network" mean a collection of smaller entities?

I really have no idea what I'm talking about. But I still think I have a better grasp than Sasse.
