In the early years of my marriage the wife, pup dog and I rode a huge block of Styrofoam down a river and got dumped out at a rapid.

I saw that the wife was swimming OK so I left her and went after the dog.

Some breeds have tremendous endurance in water; even ocean water with significant waves. Even in the freezing cold.

A JRT? ...probably not so much.

Off-topic, but maybe not, there was a PEW survey decades ago in the mid-east and the US, the question was asked:

If you were in a small boat with your wife and mother, and the boat capsizes and you could only save one, who would you save?
a) Save the wife
b) Save your mother

Most Muslims would save their mother, not their wife.

Why would Muslims save their mother and not their wife?

The answer given most was: “You can always get another wife but you only have one mother.”

Most US respondents said they would save their wife.
