The owners of the NFL are reportedly considering a rule change that would make it mandatory for players to stand during the national anthem.

A league spokesman said that the owners would discuss the potential change during a meeting next week, Dow Jones reported...

In September, the president renewed discussion about the protests when he urged owners to "fire" the "son of a bitch" who kneels during the anthem.

I thought there was already a rule for that?

The NFL's Operations Manual says players should be on the field during the anthem and that violations "may" result in disciplinary action. The Manual should be changed to require more than mere presence on the field and discipline should mandatory.

There IS already a rule for NFL players to stand at attention, heads uncovered with right hand over the heart, until the National Anthem is completed. A number of the players have chosen to ignore that rule, but unfortunately, the response by the league to the infractions was not punished when it first took place.

And now they want to put that horse back in the barn?

Rots of ruck, GI.

That is exactly how I feel about it.

If they stand but still lock arms, then don’t bother. If they’re not going to properly salute the flag, then don’t bother. We already know they don’t mean it anyway.

Exactly. Too bad for them everyone knows what they think anyway, but there’s no need to just let the overpaid thugs get away with it.

Two year mandatory enlistment in the armed services should be required and would bring about a more disciplined NFL. :)

The military doesn't need that sort ... too much distraction from the mission; too untrainable, and too much of a disciplinary problem. A couple years in a boot-camp-style prison, though, might not be amiss.

Standing is not enough. They must stand respectfully, or a critical mass of Americans will join those of us who have already sworn off watching the NFL forever. Once NFL ceases to be a source of social conversation, it will lose many of the fans who don't care about America but do care about popularity.

So the current ‘conduct policy’ covered this foolishness, but they need to create an entirely new conduct policy because Goodell and the owners (namely, the Niners owners) didn’t want to enforce it... Hmmmm.

That sounds fantastic and a little redundant, but better late than never.

It's probably too late. This sort of boycott isn't like boycotting the Birmingham municipal bus line, it's by people who have found perfectly viable alternative ways to spend their time. If the whole affair dropped out of sight immediately that won't change, and those people are going to need a reason to allocate that time back to football. The NFL will be faced with repeating major portions of half a century of marketing in a very different market. This isn't 1965, and Monday Night Football isn't one of only three TV alternatives.

So, how bad is the damage and have they stopped the bleeding? No one knows the answer to the first question, but it appears the answer to the second question is No.

Even if they didn’t properly salute out of ignorance (which isn’t the case, they know what they’re doing), it would still be shameful that grown men never learned how to properly salute and show allegiance to the flag of our country. Kindergarteners know how to do this.

But then, the overpaid thugs were deliberately disrespecting the flag of the nation which gave them the opportunity to become rich just for being able to run fast and throw a ball. And they think that gives them a grievance?!

What is the point now?

We all saw what happened, what’s in their hearts (totally unforced).

Owners closing the barn door now ONLY AFTER they saw their declining revenue and favorability just show the rest of us how greedy they truly are.

They can profess how much a patriot they are, no thanks, I won’t be buying any of their products.

Problem in NFL is shortage of quality players.
Expansion and competition from other sports spread out supply.

Now with soccer moms not letting sons play football we are starting to see impact at college levels.

I predict that in 5 years we will have half of the college football teams we have today for lack of players.

In 10 years the NFL won’t be recognizable.

The BLM/nfl has shown me how they feel about Americans especially those who have died so they can play a game.

Screw them and the made up problems they think they have.
