NAPA (CBS SF) — Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning building, forcing evacuations and injuring several people.
The Atlas Peak fire was the largest of several wildfires, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, the fire near Calistoga had burned several building and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.
Cal Fire said firefighters were battling several blazes in Sonoma County. The largest was in the area of Porter Creek Road and Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga where mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch Rd.
Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said fires had erupted at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol.
The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking point. A call for mutual aid was issued to other Bay Area fire departments.

The Santa Rosa Fire Department released a notice early Saturday morning, ordering residents in Skyhawk, Mountain Hawk and some of Rincon Valley to leave their homes. The officials have suggested the residents go to evacuation centers at the Finley Community Center or Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

The Guardian is claiming 40 casualties, 300 missing. However Cal. state fire spokesman said more than half the fires are now contained and making good progress.

This story is so wonderful, for anyone who hasn’t heard about it yet. A family was given no warning to speak of to evacuate and while getting things into the car, the beloved family dog bolted, ran off and couldn’t be found. An amazing and heartwarming reunion a couple of days later.

The newspaper board means where is he on Twitter — or as the board says, “How many times has Trump tweeted about the fires since they were whipped by winds into life-threatening force early Monday: zero.”
Zero, true, as of early Sunday evening. As the Chronicle notes, Trump did speak once, offline, about the fires. A few days ago, he promised to “stand with” Californians and said he’s in touch with the governor — and then welcomed the Pittsburgh Penguins to the White House and turned to other matters.
But the death toll in California has doubled to 41 since then, thousands of homes and millions of acres have been burned — and “one voice has been conspicuously mute,” the Chronicle wrote.”
I wish he would say something. People appreciated VP Pence and his wife were there, and folks appreciated that.
Another heart-warming story of a family returning home to their burned down house. Their shepherding dog saved goats and baby deer.
