Bashing Christopher Columbus has long been de rigueur among the liberal elite. Today, it has infiltrated our nation’s classrooms and poisons our public discourse. You know the mantra: Columbus was a greedy and egomaniacal villain who brought slavery, disease, “genocide,” and ecological ruin to a previously undisturbed land. Rather than honor this legacy of “hate,” the argument goes, Americans should celebrate the peaceful indigenous peoples who populated this hemisphere long before their lands were stolen by European explorers.
The war against Columbus is cloaked in the lexicon of “diversity” and the rhetoric of “inclusion.” But what many of its foot soldiers do not realize is that in fact it has its intellectual roots in the not so tolerant ideologies of Marxism and white supremacy.

It’s not about Columbus. Columbus is the SYMBOL of the Christian founding of this country, and that’s what the left hates with all its black heart.
That’s the thing- the left claims to want a clear eyed view of history but what they really want to do is replace one biased view of history with their own biased view of history.
It has nothing to do with a genuinely clear-eyed correcting of the record.
What’s seriously lacking is the viewpoint that human beings are by nature selfish and opportunistic but occasionally some rise, at least for a moment or two, above that nature, and accomplish great things. And it is these moments which should be recognized and honored, and we can do so without endorsing everything a person has ever done.
The liberals scream because they deny the fundamental brokenness of human beings and believe in the perfectable man....and most narcissistically believe they are already perfect, making it possible for them to condemn people greater than themselves for having flaws which they thmeselves would have had if thrust into the same time period and circumstances.
It would be refreshing to see an unvarnished biographical movie about Christopher Columbus . . . one that neither praised nor condemned the man, but showed him with both his strengths and weaknesses. Alas, history that is honest may never be available to us except in the life of the world to come. Meanwhile I am open to suggestions if any Freepers know of a decent film about the man.

What is MOST ridiculous about the anti Columbus brigades among the “Hispanic” community is that it is not a precisely, or merely a “native American” community but a PRODUCT, in historical and genetic facts, of Spanish colonialism, and with no Columbus:
1. There are no Spanish conquests in the Western Hemisphere.
2. There are no communities of “native Americans” drug north of the Rio Grande as part of Spanish colonialism and particularly not Mextec and Aztec communities that never had settlements more than 200 miles north of Mexico City.
3. There would be no “Hispanic speaking” Catholic rich communities in the Western Hemisphere, and in affect no “Spanish & native mixed” societies in all of the Western Hemisphere, and they are societies that ARE in every way more “Hispanic” than “native American” by culture.
Yet they don’t want to celebrate Columbus without whom known of what they have about “Hispanic” culture in the Western Hemisphere would exist.
So why do they do it. It is mostly out of ignorance, an ignorance played upon by Marxists and others whose real targets are not Columbus or the royalty that sent him to the Western Hemisphere, but merely that in the course of all that Columbus led to that Marxism did not rise in triumph every where in the “Hispanic” world.

Humans migrate for many reasons. The “indigenous” people in America migrated. When two groups of people run into each other, many times the inferior culture disappears or is absorbed into the superior one.
The Europeans were superior in technology, science, weaponry, social organization, organized religion, laws, governments, building, medicine, transportation and so on. The people who were here were overrun, as the europeans population increased and needed more space and resources. Wars were fought and land settled and the people with seniority lost out. Those are the facts of life.
This anti-columbus movement is anchored by leftists and Mexicans in the US who forget they have Spanish blood in them.
Columbus was brave and a great explorer. As a person of European descent, I am thankful he came here. I know his voyages lead to the greatest nation in the history of the word. That’s why I celebrate Columbus day. If you want a day get your own.
I’ll belive they are turning their backs on their past and the conquistadors when they stop speaking Spanish as if it was a sacred birthright.
