Tropical Storm Nate has formed in the western Caribbean Sea and is increasingly likely to pose a threat to parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast as a strong tropical storm or a low-end hurricane this weekend, after tracking over Nicaragua and Honduras today.

It is now likely that Nate will make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast, somewhere between Louisiana and Florida, Sunday. It remains too soon to tell where exactly this landfall will occur. The uncertainty in Nate's forecast track is higher than normal.

Most guidance also suggests this landfall will most likely be as a low-end hurricane. However, intensity forecasts are notoriously tricky this far out in time and may change.

Land interaction with Central America or the Yucatan Peninsula would likely limit the amount of intensification despite the other favorable conditions.

I'm surprised I've barely heard this mentioned with all the other news. But the storm track of this Hurricane "Nate" that was originally headed toward western Florida is now pretty much a bullseye over New Orleans. Right now it is only projected to hit as a CAT 1 but the warm waters of the gulf could cause rapid intensification. Something to keep an eye on...

I was caught flat footed yesterday when I got an email from my logistics department about this. They expect a landfalling hurricane in the gulf this weekend. Praying that it blows itself out...we’ve had more than enough grief from hurricanes this year.

And I’m scheduled for a 3 day fishing trip out of Venice starting the 18th, I’m going to have to watch this one.

Yup. And it’s still gonna be fun-loving party animal when it hits me in north Georgia.

Intensity forecasts suggest a minimal category 1 storm by landfall (CURRENTLY around Biloxi, but the track is 200 miles west of where it was yesterday morning), but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t blow up a bit and get to a Cat 2 - warm Gulf waters are present.

The New Orleans mayor better prepare and have plenty of screen printed shirts with different messages at the ready.... instead of wasting time on ensuring supplies can get where they need to be.

Oh yeah, we were weathered out several times.
We would end up having a catfish derby from
the dock.
Tight lines!

Been fishing out of there for some time. Actually we’ll be back up the road a ways closer to Empire and Buras. We swap out every year from Canada to LA. I love those fly in remote Canadian trips also.

I have to say I’m incredibly impressed with how GA Power responded to Irma. I’ve an old college friend I haven’t talked to in a while who’s high up in transmission and distribution there. I really need to ring him up, complement him, and ask him what’s changed in the last 15-20 years. They’re a lot better than I remember them being.

Looks like it will blow through several days before we get there. 6 years ago I caught a 63.5 pound Black Drum fishing the mouth of the Mississippi, found out later it would have ranked in the top 10 if I’d taken it in and made it official.

We caught a lot of big Redfish at the mouth of
SW pass, great times.
Venice wasn’t a big destination in those days,
stayed on a house boat, lots of fun.

Something I have learned from living in Florida since ‘76 is to make it a daily point of watching the tropics. Maybe it has something to do with one of my favorite merit badges working towards was weather. Having properties in NE and NW areas of the state, it keeps to be always aware just a good thing to do between June and November.

In today’s world, in addition to my daily devotionals, and news sites each morning, is at least one weather site in addition to Joe Bastardi’s daily update on Weatherbell. I think he first called in the one on the 23rd to be on the lookout for development in 7-10 days where 16 just did.

You'll probably be okay as this is a fast mover and should be onshore by this weekend.
With luck the damage won't be really severe.
