How Silicon Valley is erasing your individuality
Washington Post ^ | September 8, 2017 | Franklin Foer

Until recently, it was easy to define our most widely known corporations. Any third-grader could describe their essence. Exxon sells gas; McDonald’s makes hamburgers; Walmart is a place to buy stuff. This is no longer so. Today’s ascendant monopolies aspire to encompass all of existence. Google derives from googol, a number (1 followed by 100 zeros) that mathematicians use as shorthand for unimaginably large quantities. Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google with the mission of organizing all knowledge, but that proved too narrow. They now aim to build driverless cars, manufacture phones and conquer death. Amazon, which once called itself “the everything store,” now produces television shows, owns Whole Foods and powers the cloud. The architect of this firm, Jeff Bezos, even owns this newspaper.

Money quote:

To take another grand theory, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has exclaimed his desire to liberate humanity from phoniness, to end the dishonesty of secrets. “The days of you having a different image for your work friends or co-workers and for the other people you know are probably coming to an end pretty quickly,” he has said. “Having two identities for yourself is an example of a lack of integrity.”

What a scary worldview. I like to model my behavior as the law clerk Wemmick from Dickens' "Great Expectations". He kept his work life and private life separate. The Boz has much more insight into the human condition that Zuckerberg.

It used to be that the people of great wealth understood they would be the focus of public attention and therefore have little privacy.

The bitter truth was the people who had nothing would remain highly private.

the opposite is becoming true:

the people who lead interesting wealthy lives will be able to afford privacy while the people about whom you wish to know absolutely nothing will have zero privacy.

Zuckerberg is the type of person who has the money to buy all of the houses around his own and then keep them empty simply because he wishes to have no Neighbors.

The idiot mediot who wrote this article, 'How Silicon Valley is erasing your individuality', flunked basic geography with that title and this statement:

Amazon, which once called itself “the everything store,” now produces television shows, owns Whole Foods and powers the cloud. The architect of this firm, Jeff Bezos, even owns this newspaper.

Amazon's HQ is in Seattle Washington: Amazon HQ Seattle - Office in Seattle - Foursquare https://foursquare.com › Professional & Other Places › Office See 65 photos and 2 tips from 688 visitors to Amazon HQ Seattle. "The Head Q. of Amazon Seattle"

Yeah, not only are these cyber criminals stealing and selling your personal information, they are all setting you up for identity theft.

I quit Facebook and “surfing” the web last year. They only reason I go on is to check emails, read Freep and Brietbart, check out Drudge once is a while and that is it. What scared the s**t out of me was last year I notice they were literally making up advertisements based on the websites I visited, very specific ads like I was looking one day at a 1959 Chevy Impala on this car website and the next day, there it is in an ad. These mofos were actually tracking and listing everything I visited and then putting it into ads. That was it for me, goodbye. Remember: All these punks like Zuckerturd, are only mega rich because people go to their websites and he sells YOUR info to advertisers. That’s the only reason he makes so much money. Without the public that he exploits his website wouldn’t be worth a cent.

Go off the grid. I suggest living among the Amish or outer Mongolia.

If you want power, control of mass media is the key.

Disagree with their socialist globalist utopian vision and your website may not appear in their matches (or at least come back lower ranked) and they are even citing nytimes to fact check websites. And their uoutube may block your content as well.

What’s so scary about that? Two faced people are bad. I keep my work life and home life separate, but I’m the same person in both environments, OK I’m a little more profane at home. Think about how often the “family values” politician turns out to be a skirt chasing. Two identities is unhealthy.

Conservatives need to understand:

A. Adam Smith offered a view of free enterprise Capitalism, but he was no fan of monopolies, not even pseudo monopolies - he understood they stand to get rid of, not facilitate, competition and that competition is required for free enterprise capitalism to REMAIN healthy, including the rule-of-law health that underpins it.

B. Antitrust can be used positively, and I believe it has been in some instances (break up of big oil, and break up of Ma Bell for instance).

I am not yet sure of the Antitrust parameters I’d apply to the tech giants, but I think it should be explored and that doing so is not disrespectful to free market capitalism as Adam Smith would suggest if he were around today.

While they’re erasing MY individuality, are they erasing yours, too? I ask because there’s not much I can DO about it. I was hoping maybe you could.

C19fan: What a scary worldview.

Zuckerberg is exactly right on this point.

I abhor hypocrisy.
