I have been to a few of these and always enjoyed them. I guess I had better hurry over to the library to check out that bio of Robert E. Lee that I have wanted to read before it disappears off the shelf.

Something tells me the Civil War reenactments here in West by God will not be postponed any time soon.

Yes, because these people took the time to research a regiment’s history right down to how the men dressed and lived and in the reenactments presented an educational experience to the public. We can’t have people who are free to do that. We can’t have people who are free to see that.
It’s probably a hate crime.

"Yup - first the flags - then the monuments - then the re-enactments - next the museums - then the books."

Then the descendants of the Confederate soldiers. Easy in the Internet age.

He should be worried! I HATE how we now cater to the leftist nut jobs in our country.

Make sure he keeps his powder dry. ;)

Wait a little while and they’ll go after the medieval re-creationists for being Euro-centric.

I was just gonna say...

I have friends that are into that and one of them is an AWESOME seamstress and she makes scads of $ off of catering to them with their costuming.

What’s not to love about heavy silks, velvet and brocade on a HOT SUMMER DAY?

Grown up princess play.
Or in the case of one of our friends’ families, the whole family plays dress up, watches sword fights, Daddy wins the title for the kingdom, and everyone learns a lot of history. Mostly European history, which is verboten today.
A lot of people in it are in tech, and it is as if they intentionally and as hard as possible revert to non-tech.
Then there’s the constant chemistry experiments with not just home brew but everything. Practical archeology, someone called it.

It takes a special kind of stupid to assault people carrying muskets and bayonets.

Is there time to move the event elsewhere? It seems a shame to cost the organisers, the sutlers, the service provider businesses (water, firewood, portajohns, food vendors, et cetera) their legally anticipated income from the event. Perhaps they can sue the city/county/who ever cancelled their permit for their loss. Sue for punitive damages, say about triple damages, since they are clearly not at fault, but have been penalized.

“...they’ll go after the medieval re-creationists for being Euro-centric.”

That would be hitting close to home! And what about the fantasy LARPers?

No, a lot of long term planning and site work goes into these events. There isn’t a battle scenario at this event. The battle has been held at other sites, last year iirc it was at Cedar Creek.
I expect more more will be cancelled. Some goon in NC pepper sprayed Confederate reenactors marching in a parade this week.
My family have been in the hobby for over 15 years. People reenact for various reasons, love of history and desire to share their knowledge with others, interest in getting a glimpse of life in the time period or to understand and honor an ancestor who fought. The people we know are good, fun to be with and salt of the earth.

To be honest, I never understood these re-enactments.

Historical hobbyists;

I never understood why people enjoy the shopping genre.

I have been re-enacting/Re-creating since 1969. The Reenactors I know have run clear across the spectrum of human behavior, but there seem to be fewer thieves, liars and cowards among them. As you say salt of the earth; they will loan you, even give you the shirt off their back if you needed it.

That is not to say I haven't met some Confederate reenactors who act like they are refighting the Civil War rather than reenacting it, but there are always a few who take things too seriously. Same thing, in a way, in the medieval groups to which I belong: group politics can get kind of nasty, as if there really were thrones to game for.

But back on topic, if the sponsors and vendors can't find an alternate venue, the they should sue the devil out of who ever canceled their event. They broke a contract.

Well it’s about time the Civil War Reenactors used live ammo.

“I say let the battle be Reb reenactors vs Antifa and issue live ammo”

Lets keep it fair and make sure the ammo and weaponry is period. I think bags of urine, bicycle locks, M80’s and bats vs 1856 .58 cal rifled Enfield muskets with bayonets and Napoleon 12pdrs should be just about right.
