I attended a diabetes medical conference yesterday. I hoped I was successful in not visibly wincing when some black participants who were obviously low info voters (one kept praising Moochie Odungo’s lunch programs!) were sharing their fast food experiences and how hard it was to find healthy food choices there. The moderator pointed out that some sandwiches could account for an entire day’s recommended calories, sodium, and sugar. Every one of those participants was hugely obese. WHY, I asked myself, were they even getting meals at fast food restaurants?

When this recently happened in AZ, hundreds of customers in Wal Mart (where I shop) abandoned full carts of groceries, got mad and walked out. The store had to throw a lot of perishable food away. Hubby and I asked a store manager about what was going on. She said 80 percent of that store’s customers are on EBT, food stamps. I was very surprised because the abandoned carts were stuffed with steaks, chips, sodas, bottled water, ice cream-—

And people on there screaming that they and their kids are hungry. Who has that little food in their house that if the EBT system goes down for one day they’re all starving? Sheesh. We could eat for at least 2 weeks on the food in our cupboards and fridge. May not be what we want but we wouldn’t go hungry.

I buy non-perishable groceries that I routinely use when they are on a good sale and store them. Consequently, I save a lot of money on food. Same as you, if I couldn't get out for a while, I'd have plenty to eat between my freezer and my packaged goods.
