Democrats move to formally censure Trump over Charlottesville

WASHINGTON House Democrats are introducing a formal resolution to denounce President Donald Trump for saying that “both sides” are to blame for a violent encounter between white supremacists and neo-Nazis and the activists who showed up to protest them.

While the censure is unlikely to see traction in the GOP-led House, it serves as a rebuke to Trump and mirrors some of the Republican criticism the president has faced for his remarks.

“A president of the United States cannot support neo-Nazis. It’s just beyond the pale,” said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., a member of the House Judiciary Committee. “I hope Republicans who have expressed outrage with what he said put their money where their mouth is.”

Just three Democrats have signed onto the measure, but Nadler says he expects more to follow.

With this tactic, Democrats are taking a page from Republicans who frequently filed censure resolutions against President Barack Obama and members of his administration. Most died on the vine, but the Republican-controlled House of Representatives in 2012 voted to censure then-Attorney General Eric Holder for his role in the botched Fast and Furious gun-running operation into Mexico.

A number of lawmakers also introduced censures against Bill Clinton over his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky and resolutions were filed against George W. Bush for authorizing a no-warrant domestic surveillance program.

One president was formally censured: President Andrew Jackson in 1834 was admonished by the Senate for refusing to turn over documents that lawmakers had requested.

Your sanity checks out - now even congressfolks are creating fiction (outright lies) and trying to formalize it into reality.

I don’t think so, alarmist.

You really think a “censure” will take Trump out?

You meant to post this at Democratic Underground.

Trump’s statements have been distorted by the liars of the left. He never, ever endorsed neo-Nazis or white supremecists. I, and millions of others who are not racists, knew exactly what he meant.

You are exactly correct. Before anyone takes a strong issue on this, they need to watch that press conference twice. I am calling it the "Give em Hell, Harry" presser.

Watch his body language, his gestures, his eyes. The press blew up because the President took them to the woodshed.

Drama queen, much?

I think you’re a little too scared the reality is there aren’t many Americans outside of Urban enclaves that support tearing down America’s historical landmarks because some group labels them racist symbols...as if they get to decide what comes down what doesn’t. Most Americans do not support this you understand? Today everyone’s talking about The Monuments being removed and the movement behind who’s doing this and thsy is a good thing. I talk to people in the last 24 hours who had no idea that this was a thing going on around the country where these thug groups are trying to tear down monuments & most people are appalled. The fact that this was mentioned in the press conference yesterday by Trump specifically (tearing down statues) and the media responded with such craziness more peoe had their eyes opened. These are peo people busy living their lives and dont pay attention to politics on a day-to-day basis. I’m telling you the Democrats lose if they keep pushing this race and identity politics stuff. Its not a winning strategy outside of a few specific areas in this country.

those who hate Trump voted for Hillary— but 10% of those who voted for Hillary are watching this ruthless totally unreasonable treatment of Donald Trump -while also witnessing or even benefiting from his policy moves- I am convinced this will backfire with a lot of people.

OK, maybe an informal censure?

An informal censure would be to show up at a town hall and give them hell.

Instead of playing defense Trump needs to get on the offense. There needs to be an investigation into why the police were ordered to stand down.

Absolutely!

The politicization of Law Enforcement is unacceptable. This needs to be rubbed in their faces.
