Sen. Luther Strange will face conservative jurist Roy Moore in Alabama GOP runoff
Washington Post ^ | 08/15/2017 | David Weigel

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Republican voters here put a bitter Senate campaign into overtime, forcing Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) into a runoff with conservative jurist Roy Moore for the right to represent Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s old seat.

Strange was endorsed by President Trump, the National Rifle Association and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s super PAC, which spent $2.5 million on TV ads to boost him in Tuesday’s primary. That helped push him past Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), saving national Republicans from an embarrassment in a unique mid-summer election marked by low turnout.

Democrats, who have not won a Senate race in Alabama since 1992, nominated former U.S. attorney Doug Jones over a field of fringe candidates, according to a projection by the Associated Press.

On the Republican side, Moore, with nearly 41 percent of the vote, was in first place with about two-thirds of votes counted. Strange was in second with 32 percent and Brooks was in third with 20 percent.

Strange’s second-place showing despite his incumbent status served as a slim victory for Trump and Senate leaders — but with an asterisk. After a tumultuous day during which Trump seemed to defend white supremacists who participated in a protest in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend that left one woman dead, Strange now faces the challenge of needing to continue to court Trump’s supporters during a six-week runoff even as the national appetite for aligning with the president has diminished.

As Strange arrived at a crowded Republican victory event here, there was little worry — in the hotel ballroom, at least — that the president’s stumbling responses to Charlottesville would become a runoff problem. Conservatives, they said, would continue to back Trump over his critics.

I never heard anything about Trump defending white supremacists. Sounded more like Trump condemning all the violence, regardless of who caused it.

Don’t forget to vote for Moore in the September runoff.

Absolutely. The Bentley/Strange fiasco didn't set well at all...

Voted for Judge Moore and will be back in the booth in the runoff.

As an aside -- final totals show 400,000+ voted Republican, Less than 170,000 voted Dumbocrap.

This is just blatant Yellow journalism—and highly dangerous in its potential side effects. This is the kind of irresponsible publishing that is pushing the country towards a civil war—the shooting kind...

Flush Strange.

Yep. I wanted Mo but now I will vote for Moore.

I'm in the same boat. Strange's campaign against Brooks and Moore was disgusting and dishonest.

Conservatives need to ignore Trump’s endorsement and vote for Moore.

Whatever an endorsement from Trump does, an endorsement from RINO McConnell should be the kiss of death.

I hope so too. Moore voters and Brooks voters can tag-team The Strange
One and crush him in the runoff. I can see no reason Brooks voters will
not support Moore.
Neither one of the conservatives trashed each other.
It was McConnell that trashed them both.

I’ve notice that too. Headlines on Google searches say Strange
and Moore in runoff, not Moore crushes Strange.

LOL!

About 69 years ago my father bought a 78 record called “Sparkle Plenty’s Birthday Party” to play at my birthday party.

A blast from the past...

From this day forward, he should be known as Lex Luther!

Have no idea why President Trump would endorse this guy over Judge Moore ... Unless it’s a move to pacify McConnell and his RINO clones in the Senate. Not that such a move would ever bear good fruit. The GOP is rotten to the core with worm-ridden cucks and outright traitors.

All we do is constantly hang McConnell around Strange’s neck and the $2.3 million he took from Mitch to get his ass kicked by Judge Moore 41% to 32%
But I want to warn you that the GOPE will pay blacks to cross over in the rum off like they did in Mississippi to defeat the wonderful conservative Mc Bride and back the establishment lackey Thad ,the adulterer. Cockran, The geezer from hell. I promise that was done by Mitch McConnell and Haley Barbour. They will export that tactic to Alabama just sure as shooting. I don’t live there but someone who knows the law there tell us can a Democrat cross over in the republican primary. If that is the case get ready for a screwing.

I saw a lot of discussion here on Strange vs Brooks. Why wasn’t Judge Moore in the mix? Was it due to his 10 Commandments firing?

Mo should endorse him, and Roy Moore should help Mo Brooks unseat Dick Shelby.

We voted for Judge Moore. He is a solid conservative, Christian man. West Point grad. I heard him speak at our church a few years back. He was very impressive in speaking about Jesus Christ and what the LORD had done for him in his life. After I saw the RINO push in this state, all the senate RINOs pushing for him, the phone calls with recordings from local RINOs pushing for Luther we were solid in our vote for Judge Moore. Senator Sessions was a solid Christian, conservative. Judge Moore will be a good man to replace, not like Luther who allowed himself to fit right in with the RINOs in DC in a very short period of time.

Because they did not take him seriously and did not want him to win. It was an election of the so called veteran politicians vs. the judge who lost his job twice because he refused to take the 10 Commandments out of the court house. But, the Judge had a better backer I think, the Lord. Because Judge Moore is a solid Christian, conservative man.

Dems cannot vote in this right? What is the law here? Mitch cannot make a back room deal with them like he did in MS right?
