Candidate for governor calls for removal of Stone Mountain carving
WSB ^ | August 15, 2017 | Richard Elliot

One of the gubernatorial candidates is calling for the removal of Confederate statues and monuments from around the state, including Stone Mountain's Civil War carving.

The Democratic party front-runner for governor, Stacy Abrams, said the carving of three Confederate leaders at Stone Mountain, which is designated by state law as an official Confederate memorial site, should be removed.

“It is 2017, and now is the time for us to have a conversation about removing the last vestiges of that type of hatred and that type of vitriol toward minority communities in Georgia,” Abrams told Channel 2’s Richard Elliot.

The Georgia NAACP wants the state to remove all Confederate monuments - something that only the state legislature or local governments can actually do - not the governor.

There was a march of the “tolerance” crowd in Macon yesterday. And predictably one of the speakers called for taking down the city’s Confederate monuments.

State owns actual mountain, but private company owns all attractions surrounding the mountain.

According to Georgia state law, no one is allowed to alter the figures carved on the mountain. Any changes within the state park would require approval by the state legislature.

Seems to me that there were previous calls to remove the carvings at Stone Mountain.

I recall that the carvings were on private property and untouchable. Anybody know?

These people calling for removal of statues, monuments and carvings are no different than the Taliban destroying monuments in Iraq.

This is the tail wagging the dog on this issue. A small radical Left is trying to erase visible symbols of our history.

“It’s going to be tricky dynamiting the two slave-holders on Mount Rushmore without doing harm to the other two figures there.”

Actually, they want to get rid of TR too. Seems he was a white supremacist who hated blacks and indians.

Sorry to post and run, but someone should post the pictures of ISIS/Taliban blowing up those ancient statues and fescos in the middle east......looks like this candidate finds their actions acceptable for the US....

Thanks——I’ve never been there but my daughter found it to be quite impressive.

These people who want everything GONE are maniacs.

( I certainly hope your legislature wouldn’t approve of the defacing.)

I thought the Civil War was fought more over states’ rights than slavery. As horrible slavery was/is, can’t just lay this sin at the feet of the Southern states. Slavery was legal and the law of the land when the Civil War began.

The carvings are safe.

Originally privately owned. The state of Georgia bought the Stone Mountain carving in like the 60s or 70s, and owns it now.

No one in the State Legislature is going to vote to remove Stone Mountain. Even black Democrat Hank Johnson, who represents the district in which Stone Mountain resides, said in 2015 after the whole Roof-inspired anti-Confederacy media hysteria thing to leave Stone Mountain alone.

The state of Georgia bought the Stone Mountain carving in like the 60s or 70s,

1958. The Venables transferred it to the Memorial Association in 1956, and the Association transferred it to the state in 1958.
