People see incredible things with their eyes closed that are often very, very beautiful, including visions of Jesus, he said. That seems to happen whether people are of religious training or not. It doesnt seem to be something thats learned. It seems to be something thats genetic.

Nothing new. I read years ago(1968) that some liberal seminary students were given LSD to “enhance” their experiences.
I am going to have a fit if even one dollar of tax money was spent to fund this.
At some point they’ll figure out that much of religion was ultimately inspired by mind-altering substances in the first place.
But they will spend a lot of OPM first.
Sure, I imagine that inviting the devil in via psychedelic drugs could lead to a great deal of religious and spiritual experiences... just not the kind I would consider profitable.
When Timothy Leary was kicked out of Harvard in the early 60s he went across the river to divinity students.
These are Schedule 1 drugs. You can’t write a prescription for these things.
I assumed that made it impossible to perform scientific research on them, but perhaps that is incorrect.

I had two experiences with nitrous oxide, one recreational, one medical. The first time the people around me seemed like demons, the second time I saw an evil, pulsing mandala. Laughing gas, not. Fortunately it wears off quickly. I have no desire to seek the transcendent in drugs - I’d probably go bad places
