President Trump officially commissioned the U.S. Navy's newest and largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, in Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday, applauding the military's strength.
"When it comes to battle, we don't want a fair fight. We demand victory and we will have total victory, believe me," Mr. Trump said of the powerful aircraft carrier.
"American steel and American hands have constructed a 100,000-ton message to the world," he added. "America's might is second to none."

Watched the whole ceremony, although not on CBS. This is something you don’t get to see every day. Very impressive!, including the hymn that was played “Eternal Father Strong to Save”. That you wouldn’t hear if it had been someone else as President.

The Nimitz and Ford are almost identical in size.
Nimitz is about 50 feet shorter (give or take) and displaces 10,000 fewer tons. Drive by Newport News Shipbuilding on a regular basis and watched the Ford come together. She’s a magnificent warship; did a double-take the first time I saw the island on her, and realized it was moved closer to the stern.
One thing that is truly amazing is how fast those carriers can move. I’ve had Navy friends tell me that, at the end of a deployment, when it’s a sprint for home, a Nimitz-class carrier can literally leave her escorts in the dust. When the ship is making that kind of speed, the “rooster tail” (bow wave” is huge. Hard to imagine 90,000 tons of steel and technology sprinting across the ocean at near-freeway speeds.
BTW, a lot of former carrier sailors will tell you the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was the fastest flattop ever built, thanks to the power generated by its four reactors. However, I’ve also heard that the Nimitz-class carriers are nearly as fast; hull speed, which can be easily calculated by a well-known formula (1.34x sqrt of the length of the waterline).
Using that data, top speed of the Big E was about 45 knots and 43 knots for a Nimitz-class. The ships are over-engineered (in terms of power) and the key limiting factor is the ability of the drive shafts and propellers to handle the output. However, I’ve also seen reports that put the top speed somewhere between 35 and 40 kts. The best way to know with certainty is to join the Navy, graduate from nuclear power school, get assigned to a carrier and have a “need to know.” Then, you’ll get the actual numbers.
Yes and the Nimitz can actually launch planes, a feat the Ford has yet to accomplish ...

I have a good friend that did just that and he told me his boat could run 50 MPH! Don't remember which carrier he was aboard.
