Great column. The value of physical work cannot be understated.

There was a wonderful series on public television years back in which a group of yuppies agreed to go live in conditions like the 19th-century American frontier for a year. The participants were typical urbanites, several of whom lived in large houses with pools and fine furnishings. They arrived in late spring and had to build their own shelters and plant crops. I still remember one family in which the parents barely knew their children, but by autumn there was a scene of the father and (formerly surly) 12-year-old son, striding through their field of grain in overalls, looking fit, dirty, sunburned and very content within themselves and in their relationship. Family life was now centered around the main room / kitchen in their cabin, where the formerly glamorous mother cooked a baked with a wood stove. After the family returned to their old life in a luxurious many-room mansion, they missed each other and yearned for their former closeness on the frontier, battling the elements to survive.

I wish I still had my dad’s brown fedora with the black grosgrain band. One of my relatives still has Dad’s Harris tweed overcoat from 1935.

Very few modern liberal icons has worked a damned day in their life at a job that didn’t involve spending other people’s money.Perhaps the most recent example of someone who didn’t is Jimmy Carter”””

However, I think he INHERITED the family peanut farm & he declared BANKRUPTCY 3 times there. NOT a very good businessman.

LOL, I can barely talk about Carter without wanting to spit or laugh at the same time, but at least he had experience running it into the ground!

IMO, our level of prosperity is just plain irrational given our present national character and our lack of civilizational awareness.

I think we're just in limbo, waiting for the U.S. Dollar to cease to be the world's reserve currency. When that changes, everything will change indeed.
