In Interview, Trump Expresses Anger at Sessions and Comey, and Warns Mueller

WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Wednesday that he never would have appointed Attorney General Jeff Sessions had he known Mr. Sessions would recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation that has dogged his presidency, calling the decision “very unfair to the president.”

In a remarkable public break with one of his earliest political supporters, Mr. Trump complained that Mr. Sessions’s decision ultimately led to the appointment of a special counsel that should not have happened. “Sessions should have never recused himself and if he was going to recuse himself he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else,” Mr. Trump said.

In a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times, the president also accused James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director he fired in May, of trying to leverage a dossier of compromising material to keep his job. Mr. Trump criticized both the acting F.B.I. director who has been filling in since Mr. Comey’s dismissal and the deputy attorney general who recommended it. And he took on Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel now leading the investigation into Russian meddling in last year’s election.

Sessions is a HUGE disappointment. Trump needs a ball buster like Jim Jordan or Kobach, someone like that.

“Trump had every right to expect Session NOT to recuse himself on Russia. Trump now as a democratic hack running a scam investigation on him forever because of Jeff’s choice.”

Sessions was heavily involved in the Trump campaign, and was a huge Trump supporter prior to that. How could he not be seen as biased in Trump’s favor? Of course he had to recuse himself in any investigation that might involve Trump. It could be argued that Trump should have known better than to choose an AG that was so close to him.

Yes, President Trump is getting disgusted with the quagmire of the special council and resents being distracted from what he considers his real tasks. He blames Sessions but I’m not sure he is correct to do so. Neither of them foresaw the chain of events. I hope they find a way to shut down this MahRussia witchhunt because I think Sessions is doing a lot of excellent work and I would be sorry to see his career destroyed.

-- It has to be a real blow to Sessions after such a career in the Senate --

He'd make more money on the private side, and not be subjected to the publicity and darts. Loyalty is a two way street. I'd tell Trump to stuff it, and quit.

So do Sessions and his deputy last the weekend? Would Trump go after them like this without having their replacements lined up? Will their replacements remove Mueller or shut down the investigations outright?

All very interesting, but I don't understand what this has to do with Sessions.

Are you suggesting there is an active investigation underway and that Sessions is the indispensable leader of that investigation. If so, why?

Are you suggesting that the Russia stuff is necessary to make the DOJ appear evenhanded and non- partisan when they drop the boom on Hillary and other top D's?

What am I missing?

Where has Rudy been? Haven’t heard a thing about him in months and months. I don’t think his health is too good.

It is important for the DOJ to maintain independence from a president

That is one of the dumbest things I have read today. Neither the Justice Department or the FBI are independent, they work for the President period.

It’s not fake news - I listened to the video. But I am disappointed because I like Sessions.

I don’t blame Trump for being frustrated, but as I recall, the opposition by the Democrats to his confirmation was formidable to say the least. And half the Republicans were trying to sabotage him too, right?

Does anyone else remember this? I remember being pleasantly surprised Sessions even got confirmed.

How do we know Sessions didn’t have to recuse himself to get the confirmation? Serious question... Everyone is saying he didn’t have to recuse himself but how do you prove that?

Another question: Sessions was part of the Trump campaign, which, whether we like it or not, is under investigation for this Russian election influence thing. We all know it’s unfair, a double standard, but yet it is really happening - even six months later.

If it’s so clear that it’s bogus, why can’t we make it go away?

It’s “real” because the MSM decides what is “real”. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is.

So, RussiaGate is the fake “reality” we are dealing with, and that was the “reality” Sessions was dealing with when he was trying to get confirmed. In that “reality”, isn’t it a conflict of interest for an AG to be in charge of an ongoing investigation of which he is a potential target?

How, exactly, was Sessions supposed to justify before the senate confirmation committee NOT recusing himself? There would have only Ben one way: convince everyone that the whole Russian thing is bogus - something that no one to this day nobody has been able to do - half a year later!

I like Sessions and I’d rather hear that Trump understood Sessions’ predicament.

When my heroes start eating eachother it makes me sad.

President Trump, if you are listening, please have a talk with your AG, one of your earliest supporters, before you give up on him. I think your fierce loyalty to your supporters (like Jeff Sessions, like me) is one of my favorite things about you.

Go Trump!

Then Rosenstein, another Trump pick, will have the reins.

He's the last guy who should be AG. He did not have to appoint a special counsel, but after only a few days of heat from Schumer and the Dims, Rosenstein appointed Mueller to take the head off himself.

Its so dumb that its one of the main things gone over at an AG confirmation hearing.

The simple fact is that Sessions should have resisted any efforts to get him to recuse. The democrats would be flipping out about it and Sessions could have simply said “Show me a democrat official that has recused himself from anything significant and I’ll consider using that as a template for whether or not I’ll recuse myself.”

Democrats NEVER recuse themselves so they’d have no example to provide for Sessions to follow.

Someone else probably replied to you, I haven’t read to the end of the comments on this thread BUT, I thought the same thing and went to the NYTimes thoroughly expecting a ‘sources said’ but they do indeed have a complete audio of the interview - smart of them.

I support Jay Sekulow for AG. I always thought Sessions was too nice to be AG and prosecute the lawless left. Jay seems sharp as a tack and tough as nails. My two cents.
