On a day that the G20 hosted a Women’s Empowerment working lunch, President Donald Trump went the extra mile to make sure he empowered the women in his own family.
Months after appointing his daughter Ivanka as one of his official advisers, Mr Trump sent the former model to stand in for him at a G20 leaders’ meeting.
It came hours after his wife Melania charmed President Vladimir Putin at an official dinner, having already been sent into a meeting between her husband and the Russian premier as a messenger by the US delegation.
This morning Ivanka, 36, took up the seat reserved for the President during the third working session of the G20 leaders while Mr Trump attended separate meetings elsewhere at the summit.
G20 leaders often send proxies to working sessions while they hold bilateral meetings with other leaders, but it is thought to be the first time a leader’s daughter has fulfilled such a role.
The President’s wife Melania has also been called upon by the US delegation, after it emerged she was sent in to Mr Trump’s lengthy one-on-one meeting with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to try to wind up their conversation.
Mr Trump spent 2hrs 16mins with President Putin on Friday, and Rex Tillerson, the US Secretary of State, disclosed that presidential aides became exasperated that the President was allowing it to overrun for so long. Slots of 30 minutes are usually allotted for each bilateral meeting.
Mr Tillerson said: “They even sent in the First Lady at one point to see if she could get us out of there, and that didn't work either … We went another hour after.”
At the dinner that followed, Mrs Trump was seated next to Mr Putin, and appeared to be getting on

I’m SO impressed with Melania! She not only is very pretty, dresses to a T, she also can charm the socks off the men from those countries at the summit. They can’t help but notice the beauty we have as our First Lady! She is highly educated, soft spoken, and is a great asset to the President. To show her devotion to her President, to go with him ... to be by his side when he said he was going to run for President... she is one special lady! She is as brave as her husband.. she does not flinch... at least not in public.
Trump understands time is important. Take 4 30 minute slots away from nations we could care less about and move on.
Even better is expand the day schedule by 2 hours and forget
about it. If the President wants to speak with Putin, so be it.
Melania is fluent in 6 languages. Surely Russian is one of them. Why would she speak to Putin in German?
I know this might sound dumb, and I’m not trying to sound like a lib, but is there any reason why the US and Russia can’t just get along and figure stuff out?

Jared, being young and very smart and Jewish can head off a lot of rough road for President Trump...the job he did when President Trump met with Saudi, Israel, Egypt and Jordan, and now this at the G summit...
At both places Ivanka met with women to set up for respect for women, not to be above men, but to be equal to men in working at a job, heading a business where men usually fill, and being a wife, mother along with it, who better to do this than the President's Daughter, he brought her up, he knows her strengths and weaknesses, so good for both of them...
With Our First Lady, every man at that summit was drooling, and Putin being the man he is, was pleased as punch to converse with Mrs. Trump...they both speak fluent German, and looked to me like they both were having a great discussion...
The class that President Trump and Our First Lady and family brings to America is something we have not seen for years...and it is very refreshing to see them on the World Stage...
So now that the light went on, I apologize for being so narrow minded about who is what and where and why...I see a clearer picture now...

Because they are both fluent in it. I don’t believe Melania speaks Russian. Slovene is very similar to the Germanic languages and Putin is fluent in German. All just a guess.

Because she doesn’t speak Russian. They both speak English but perhaps for diplomatic reasons, they chose a neutral language.
She speaks Slovene, English, French, Serbian, and German.
When Melania was sent in to try for a closure on the meeting between Putin and The Donald, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall.
I’m guessing that both men froze, in mid-word, when Melania walked in. And they just stared. Melania cuts a striking image and even the hardened Vladimir Putin must have paused at such a vision.
I’m not surprised the two continued for another hour. I’m guessing the conversation was hot, heavy and involved. But when two gentlemen are interrupted by the likes of Melania Trump, biology plays a role.
