North Korea launches missile, nearing Japanese waters

On its website, South Korean state news agency Yonhap cited South Korea's military as saying an unidentified ballistic missile launched from a location near the North's border with China at 9:40 a.m. local time. South Korean President Moon Jae-in ordered a National Security Council meeting after the launch, Yonhap reported, citing the Blue House — the South's equivalent of the White House.

In the tense aftermath of the Pueblo seizure, Pentagon war planners weighed using nuclear weapons to stop a possible communist invasion of South Korea, as well as mounting a massive air attack to wipe out North Korea's air force. The nuclear option, eerily codenamed "Freedom Drop," envisioned the use of American aircraft and land-based missiles to incinerate onrushing North Korean troops.

It’s a nuke. You don’t even have to get the ship tied up in the dock. Set it off in the middle of the harbor for maximum devastation.

It’s 1200km from Pyongyang to Tokyo. Given the flight time, that seems to be a high trajectory and the missile was probably capable of reaching Japan. The NK missile technology is decades old. The more they screw around, the more likely an error is to occur. The ballistic missile equivalent of MH17 can easily happen. I can see why they’re upset.

The Norks are trying to stir up tensions with the US Trump and China Xi meeting. Trump should tell the Norks that Fat Boy the Turd will be shot down if he travels anywhere and that if his military fires into South Korea then they will all be executed.

We are on the same page there. Either China takes care of it or we do. The nut regime in NK is coming to a head.

They have decided to poke the bear with bigger spears.
Their choice.

A couple questions for more knowledgeable freepers.. 1) is there a way to know if the launched missile has a nuclear warhead? 2) I know the missile landed in the ocean but is there a way to know its intended target?

Yes, but it’d need to be a sizable one. A Hiroshima sized bomb at Pier 11 would not have the devastating effect on NYC you’d expect. They haven’t shown the capabilities to make a thermonuclear megaton device.

They can track and calculate its trajectory, thus where they expect it to land. Whether it has a nuke warhead on it is a guess. The only way to know for sure is to attain the missile debris or look for the mushroom cloud if it hits its target.

that somehow got filled with acetylene and O2 and sparked off.

Thank you for an excellent idea. And just in time for the 4th!

South Korea is about to host the Olympics (Winter).

Is this a cause for concern with 20,000 artillery pieces that North Korea has aimed at the South.

Of course, if Obama were still president or Hillary, the world would be a safe place. Just put on Rose Colored Glasses and sing Mary Poppin's songs...

If Bill Clinton were president, he would find an intern to relieve the situation...

It might be possible to neutralize the 20,000 pieces of artillery using tactical nukes.

They might be able to fire over the blasts, but only if there were far enough away from the detonations.

This might sound EXTREME, but there is no easy way to neutralize 20,000 pieces of artillery without serious civilian casualties in South Korea -- particularly the city of Seoul.

I don't know where the Olympics will be, but they really should be on the Southern most part of South Korea.

Norks are China’s ankle biter.

Yep. And the Kim family rules that country only as long as China allows them too.

China has used the "crazy" Kim's for decades to take the heat off of China (hey, look we're not so bad. At least we're not NK) and to keep Korean unification at bay. But now China has a problem - NK's nuclear bombs are starting to go off on a regular basis and their missiles (mostly) go where their aimed. If China doesn't act soon that little ankle biter is going to turn into a Rottweiler. When NK's nukes can reliably target Beijing that leash will be broken.

NK is gonna target Seoul soon. They are crazy and will continue.

The west will not wait for that to happen. They are close enough to practice in the ocean.

I believe a strike is imminent.
