Tech firm fed up with ABQ crime
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | June 24th, 2017

One of Albuquerque’s shining high-tech startups has put the city on notice that it may leave Downtown and potentially the state if something isn’t done about the “marked deterioration in the safety and security of the downtown Albuquerque area.”

Lavu, which launched in 2010, sent a letter to Gov. Susana Martinez and Mayor Richard Berry earlier this week decrying the crime and “consistent and ongoing verbal harassment by homeless and recently released inmates” that his employees have been having to endure.

“I cannot stress enough to the both of you how serious the lack of safety in downtown Albuquerque has become for Lavu,” company President Ohad Jehassi wrote. “So much that there are now serious discussions at the Board of Director level at Lavu as to the need of Lavu to move … so that Lavu can assure employees that they need not risk their life, health or property when coming to or leaving from work.”

Jehassi met with members of the Berry administration, including Police Chief Gorden Eden, on Wednesday to discuss his concerns. Gilbert Montaño, Mayor Berry’s chief of staff, called it a positive and productive meeting.

While he declined to go into specifics, Montaño said overtime has been approved to increase the presence of officers trained in crisis intervention, including dealing with individuals with mental illness and substance abuse problems.

Ironically, a KOB vehicle was stolen in Downtown Albuquerque on Friday while the station’s crew was working on the Lavu story.

Crime has become the main issue in the mayor’s race, with many candidates arguing that the situation has reached crisis level. The National Insurance Crime Bureau recently reported that the Albuquerque area had the highest per-capita rate of auto thefts in the country.

Born in Albuquerque. Undergrad and MBA from UNM. Was in Business there for years. Loved Albuquerque.

Moved out in 1988 for business reasons, but still loved going back....

But for the last 10 -12 years I can’t stand even driving through there. It went from a vibrant city with a bright future to a dirty, crime and corruption ridden second world city, now, seemingly rapidly turning into a third-world hellhole.

Albuquerque has been negatively impacted by the consent degree putting the police under court monitoring by the Obama Justice Department under former Attorney General Eric Holder. See Justice Department Issues Joint Statement Of Principles With City of Albuquerque NM to Reform Albuquerque Police Department. Like other cities where police have been put under court monitoring, crime has increased. Albuquerque is experiencing Obama/Holder's "Ferguson Effect."

Rio Rancho, just outside of Albuquerque, has very low crime. Good schools as well.

When violent crime in Rio Rancho is committed, they are often gang bangers from Albuquerque.

The auto theft in ABQ has gotten totally out of hand.

Just WOW

I stayed in Old Town four years ago when I was moving cross country. ABQ has always been a bit dicey but not that bad.

I've never been to New Mexico. I'd like to visit there someday.
But it has been my experience that whenever liberal Democrats
are in charge, there is crime. The ugly, common
street crime and property crime that is at pandemic
levels in America. It's a destroyer of civilizations.

Lavu needs to hire Gus Fring for community outreach. He is very good at dealing with unruly people.

ABQ crime is complicated by the Indians. They are like ghetto thugs in Oakland or Detroit. And, they claim that NM courts do not have jurisdiction in “Indian Lands.”

I recall driving east on I-40 from AZ one night and seeing a glow on the horizon for an hour before I crested a ridge to see Albuquerque sprawled out below.

Quite the sight.

Luckily NM still (for now) has some of the most generous gun laws.

I'm wondering how long that will last what with Dem control of the NM House and Senate. Get a Dem gov. and what we enjoy here will end. The trend in NM is going blue. It's not even purple anymore.

Good thing.

Went to UNM from 68 to 70, then joined the Navy. Didn’t know what to major in and was turned off by the freaking radicals, who burned down the ROTC building shortly after I left. Never went back to NM. Certainly won’t visit after reading this.

The DEM legislature made a play this last session to all but criminalize every private gun transfer, it failed that time. You're right though, they'll be back at it next session. I think this county will stay dark red as long as the drilling business endures, they haven't made inroads here yet to blue it up.

One could say that about almost every large American city.

I disagree, I live (45= yrs) very near the rez in the 4 corners and the Navajo are a pretty laid back tribe. Farmington is a shopping hub for the Navajos and they come by the thousands every week. A lot of the younger natives get some college/trade behind them and prosper quite nicely living off the rez, rez life is pretty stifling. I don't think they contribute to the crime near as much as the illegals that flood up I25. The stolen car epidemic has been there for years in ABQ, being just a few hours drive straight south on the interstate to Mexico.

The reservation is a sovereign nation and requires either federal or tribal policing. NM courts don't have jurisdiction inside the rez. The natives are subject to state/local laws off the reservation.

Albuquerque is different. To the south there is the Air Force Base and Sandia Labs. To the North the Sandia Pueblo, and to the East Mountains. The only direction it sprawls is towards the west. To the east it’s like it’s cut off with a knife right at the entrance to the canyon.
