In the far-off Pacific Northwest corner of the U.S., there is a state called Washington. The city of Seattle resides therein.
Four of “top” five are run by crazy socialists - no thanks.
Mostly Portland but rest of family lives mostly in Seattle.
BUT, the 2 richest members of my family both live in California.
Illinois?? Seriously??
Yeah, I noticed that too, after having read about the IL possible junk bond status. Made me wonder about this list, and not in a good or positive way.
I acrually investigated Oxnard but still thinking we might end up in Escondido.
You caught the tail end of the glory years in California, congratulations, well done.
Ten (or more) years earlier you did NOT need a skill. You could fall out of the sky in CA, think you wanted to do something, do it for a few years, make progress if you could show up every day and liked what you were doing (or; go try something else; and you could do that 5 times) and then either start a business of your own or begin making enough money to afford a house and on and on. If you only did that and made no horrible financial mistakes along the way you are a millionaire.
Having arrived in CA 1972, I couldn’t believe what I had found. The opportunities were infinite, the roads were excellent, of course the weather was outstanding. If you lived here then you thought “anybody who doesn’t live here is an idiot”.
Any chance California will learn why it’s the second worst and improve life for its citizens?
Snort.
Unless you’re right down by the ocean, in what they now call Channel Islands, Oxnard is a ghetto.
Very nice area. I know a retired couple (actually they’re my brothers’ friends) who live aboard a ketch in Ventura Harbor. I don’t know if there is any way to earn a living anywhere along the central CA coast. I’ve never been able to discern one outside of agriculture, owning a winery or a restaurant that has already been there 25 years.
I guess one could own a cannabis shop! Geez, I went to my local shopping center and one of the spaces, and not a small one, had turned into a vape shop. It was fairly large, about 30 x 30, not like a 60’s headshop at all. All the showcases were brand new, it looked like a jewelry shop, not hippyish at all. There were literally thousandes of pipes and bongs for sale. I couldn’t believe it, it was merchandised like a 7-11, there was no space bigger than 3 square inches where there wasn’t something for sale. I told the guy behind the counter “whoever owns this store believes the future of cannabis is going to be huge”. He said “Thaaaaaaat’s right!”
in what parallel universe is Illinois a great place to make a living. You can make a killing there, though.
Determining tax rate based on the income tax rate only is fine if you don’t own a home and never buy anything - but recalculate Illinois including property taxes, gas tax and sales tax, bias those results for the fact that most of the population is concentrated in or near Cook County, and add in the fact that the income tax is almost certain to go up lest the state go into receivership, and I expect the results come out a little bit differently - like in the toilet.
And “workplace safety” apparently doesn’t include those who make a living on the drug corners, although it is pretty darn good for the enormous number of slugs existing on political patronage jobs.
Here in Washington state they always talk about Seattle being the fastest growing city with lots of employment.
Well, there are the biggy tech companies here like Microsoft and Amazon workers are buying condos in downtown close to work.
So there is tech work and there is assembly work at Boeing. The other jobs available on the West Coast are majorly Starbucks spread everywhere.
So those with tech skills do well - and would do better if we could cut down the HB1 visa workers that Microsoft uses - and there are lots of snowflake jobs as baristas.
There are also miles and miles of homeless living in tents under our freeways.
The elite techies ignore that kind of poverty and have their Mac Mansions and their parties yakking about how great they are and how jobs are growing here in Seattle and the surrounding region.
Meh, Washington State...... Lots of rain and lots of freaking liberals. Housing prices are too high but the beer is pretty good. Not sure I could drink enough to ignore all the damn liberals though...
SC is a great place to live.
Thanks for the info! I suspected there was something wrong with Oxnard.
At least I am familiar with Carlsbad, San Marcos and Escondido...and like them.
NC varies wildly from place to place. Raleigh and the Triangle in general are absolutely booming. Charlotte metro to a somewhat lesser extent is too. Wilmington and Asheville are doing quite well on the basis of climate, scenery and recreational opportunities, and never missed a beat through the Obama years. Other metros are treading water at best although the Trump effect has lifted spirits and there is actually new construction going on, so there’s hope. The rural areas are dying, it’s pitiful.
SC #7 worst, economically.
Baloney! Florida has No income tax and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. We in south Florida do not have winter heating expense nor many of the other expenses of the listed states. Most listed are left wing states excepting Texas. Who is trying to brainwash whom? Florida is paradise compared to those listed!
Isn’t it rather AUD to factor in unemployment rate?
