McDonald's Hits All-Time High As Wall Street Cheers Replacement Of Cashiers With Kiosks

Cowen says McDonald's will upgrade 2,500 restaurants to its "Experience of the Future" technology by year-end, which includes digital ordering kiosks.

The firm raises its rating on McDonald's to outperform from market perform and price target for the shares to $180 from $142.

Same store sales estimate for 2018 raised to 3 percent from 2 percent.

McDonald's shares hit an all-time high on Tuesday as Wall Street expects sales to increase from new digital ordering kiosks that will replace cashiers in 2,500 restaurants.

Cowen raised its rating on McDonald's shares to outperform from market perform because of the technology upgrades, which are slated for the fast-food chain's restaurants this year.

McDonald's shares rallied 26 percent this year through Monday compared to the S&P 500's 10 percent return.

Andrew Charles from Cowen cited plans for the restaurant chain to roll out mobile ordering across 14,000 U.S. locations by the end of 2017. The technology upgrades, part of what McDonald's calls "Experience of the Future," includes digital ordering kiosks that will be offered in 2,500 restaurants by the end of the year and table delivery.

"MCD is cultivating a digital platform through mobile ordering and Experience of the Future (EOTF), an in-store technological overhaul most conspicuous through kiosk ordering and table delivery," Charles wrote in a note to clients Tuesday. "Our analysis suggests efforts should bear fruit in 2018 with a combined 130 bps [basis points] contribution to U.S. comps [comparable sales]."

He raised his 2018 U.S. same store sales growth estimate for the fast-food chain to 3 percent from 2 percent.

The analyst raised his price target for McDonald's to $180 from $142, representing 17.5 percent upside from Monday's close. He also raised his 2018 earnings-per-share forecast to $6.87 from $6.71 versus the Wall Street consensus of $6.83.

Actually we’re there as you know. i had to program the algorithm to check the barcode for a proper scan - we also had what were called supplemental bar codes for specific products within product lines.

My guess is the manufacturer will add in the RFID at packaging. Because it would overwhelm a grocery store. They’ll run the incoming product through scanning towers to populate the database.

Hey a guy held the door so it wouldn’t slam in my face at the convenience store where I stopped for gas tonight.

Of course he was 60+ years old. He remembers how America used to be; like I do.

Yes, I thanked him BTW. I almost said to him “We don’t see that much in America anymore, do we?”.

I go to Union bank on Coast HWY in Oceanside CA. They used to have 3 windows open and an operations manager supervising tellers and a manager. Now they have 1 window open and if there’s a kine the manager opens a window. no operations manager down two tellers.

I carry a stylus in my pocket (pencil eraser) for public touchscreens. If I mess up and forget the stylus the back of a knuckle works pretty well.

“this is EXACTLY what they want.” right. slops for the peasants and caviar for themselves.

Your sad story has been going on forever....MOST peasants are peasants because they are too damned lazy to get off their butts and get an education, learn a trade, go to vocational school, serve an apprenticeship, people are sick and tired of supporting able bodied adults who have no incentive to do anything but have illegitimate kids and complain about their fate.

Yum, like WAWA, touch a screen that 100 people have just touched and then you eat with your hands. Good for Big Pharma, too.

It's like at the store. Last time I was in one I'm walking fast towards a lone open register with one item and this lady with a bulging cart looks right at me, looks away and goes ahead of me.....lol..I'm trying to mask my utter boiling contempt hoping she'll again look my way and say, "oh, you go ahead", but noooo....She says, "I have some coupons", in a demanding sharp voice.☺ The male cashier turns and looks at me stone faced, I smiled and laughed. That got the sea hag in front to scowl right at me.

Got one of those in po-dunk Kansas town. Had 3 items and a prescription I had already paid for. Some chic, who thought see was all that and a big of chips had a HUGE cart of stuff. Often people will say go ahead.

Nope she did the whole thing and was annoyed at me standing there. Was I supposed to cheer each item as I was rung up?

Had a guy at a Safeway store (knew his wife, too) actually stand at the register trying to balance his checkbook. The wife finally grabbed his arm and pulled him away from the register she was so embarrassed. At least she could figure it out. His knuckles may still be dragging; don’t know.

lol

The problem is what to do to occupy people with no responsibilities and lots of idle time. The drug epidemic, unruly behavior, violence/terrorism and a lack of achievement are all at least in part due to young people being enabled to lead unproductive lives with no responsibilities to others.

I briefly dated a woman who is in McDonald's H.R. department in Oakbrook, IL. (Briefly means three months.)

She explained McDonald's strategy for implementing kiosks and it was NOT to eliminate people from their workforce. She explained that McDonald's is trying to move itself up the fast-food chain bringing new and more choices into their restaurants.

If you've noticed their menu lately, they're starting to include more customized and higher-end burger choices as one example and that's really boosting their sales. They started with "breakfast all day" and are quickly moving towards hand-packed handburgers made in the restaurant itself. This expansion of the menu means McDonald's has to dramatically change their order, food preparation and delivery processes to scale their restaurants both vertically (deliver faster) and horizontally (expand the menu choices.) They have to do all this within the footprint of their existing stores which is incredibly difficult given their size and re-engineering all their processes means they have to get it right out-of-the-box or their same store sales risk getting hurt. They can't afford that.

They're doing this by shifting the counter workers away from taking orders and moving them back into kitchen and order delivery. They're also doing remodeling in the existing footprints to reclaim cashier space with food delivery and preparation space. Hard to do while running the place and keeping things profitable.

Kiosks are but ONE step McDonalds is taking, they're doing much more.

Now the McDonald's right outside the building I work in at LaSalle and Jackson (Downtown Chicago) is one of their market test sites so I saw the kiosk's being implemented last Summer along with the expansion of the menu with new menu items as well.

In the past I'd only go into that McDonald's for coffee maybe once or twice a week. The food and service in this same McDonald's has gotten so good I'll grab a breakfast or a lunch there once a week now.

It's been a dramatic improvement. I think McDonald's has finally discovered what they need to do to turn their restaurants around.

So much so I've actually purchased McDonald's stock. I've *never* purchased individual stocks in the past. I'm so encouraged by what I'm seeing at McDonalds I had to buy some.

Separately, not sure why I stopped seeing this woman. Kinda liked her quite a bit. Wondering if I should call on her again .....

I’m not fond of high prices to pay people 15 to tip hamburgers. Would prefer HS students at 11.50

“Gone is the language barrier and wrong orders!”

I learned to speak Jive at a McDonald’s back in the ‘70s. However, once most of the McD’s staff started speaking Ebonics I gave up going as we could no longer communicate. My orders would always come out wrong.

I assume these new robot kiosks will be programmed to take orders in multiple languages: Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Gibberish.
